Drove a FWD Honda from 21 to 21 and at 25 years of age but I wanted RWD and I purchased a used E30M3. it handled great with snow tires. 20 years later, I specifically purchased an Sdrive X1 (not X drive) and even with 19's Michelin AS3+ and it is phenomenal. AWD will help stoplight drag racers put the power down... but otherwise.. I'll take RWD. Last edited by M3 Adjuster; 11-22-2019 at 04:46 PM.. |

There went any consideration for AWD for me (..not that I need it living in SoCal). I was going to potentially give an AWD + MT a try. MT + RWD it is! Bring it on.

I've said this many times but a lot of us love RWD specifically because it will bust the tires loose and dance around, that's half of the fun. Do I care that my friend's RS6 can accelerate more quickly than I can? Nope. With that said, I'm actually becoming less excited by RWD shenanigans and more tired of paying for rear tires so I honestly think I would go for the AWD + automatic variant if I go for a G80 M3 in the future. I've been having a lot of fun in the F90 M5s I've driven. |

If I bite (thinking I'll sit out because I just bought my M2C, which I love), I'll take the MT/RWD version. However, I am concerned about traction issues. I think the S55 reached the limits of where RWD is superior. I would have definitely jumped at the MxDrive M3 with MT, given the RWD bias and ability to switch to RWD mode. Oh well.

The ZF8 is very unlikely to be a rewarding experience for those who like to make their own gear change decisions (it certainly isn't in an X3M). I'm sure that those who drive in a straight line between stoplights and have a heavy right foot will be fine....but that's not why I buy an M car. Since we now know it's going to be early 2021, I have over a year to sew some wild oats. ;-) Last edited by pbar; 11-22-2019 at 10:35 PM.. |

I'm no pro but I also feel having awd brings some feedback back into these electro steering racks. My 911 4S is a lot more communicative than a 2S. If I'm getting the G80 it'll be rwd manual but it's no longer a no brained how it has been. Plenty of nice awd automatic cars out there and if a fully loaded M340 is in the mid 60s this shots gonna be in the mid 80s. There's a lot of car that can be bought for that kind of money. |

Funny I was just saying this last night and now I see this thread lol I'm content with waiting 1 year.. time to have fun with my F85 cause I truly love this damn thing.
I feel good about the M3 though, I told a friend a few months back if the new M3 comes with the same drivetrain as the F90 M5 / X5M and that "2JZ but with better cooling" looking motor it's over...ball game...bimmer got it hands down and they'll also have my money lol Btw that "2JZ" comment comes from when I saw early production photos of the short block which looked very 2J ish

Odd that all this information and pics are leaking when apparently the actual reveal and production is a year away. By the time the reveal actually comes it will be very anticlimactic. Kind of a strange timeline.
