IIHS Front crash prevention: vehicle-to-pedestrian
Does anyone understand why the base trim (Active Guard) performs better than the optional trim (Active Driving Assistant Professional)?

It’s the one feature I haven’t been able to test but that’s only because the kid refuses to be the test subject. Wimp!

Confirmation from IIHS
My question: Can you please confirm that the base trim (Active Guard) performs better than the optional trim (Active Driving Assistant Professional) in the vehicle-to-pedestrian front crash prevention test?
IIHS response: The 2020 BMW 3 Series has two completely different systems from different suppliers. The information that is on our website is correct. My question: Can you please confirm that when it shows “10 mph” under “Crossing child” for the “12 mph test” for “All trims” with “Active Guard”, the “10 mph” indicates that the system reduced the speed from 12 mph to 2 mph during this test? IIHS response: You are correct, in the 12 mph test, the speed was reduced from 12 mph to 2 mph. The upshot is that for the additional autonomous-like capability that is provided by the Active Driving Assistant Professional package, we miss out on some front crash prevention capability for pedestrians. BMW should be making this more clear in their sales literature. |

interesting, I am very happy with the performance of my DA Pro package. It already saved me from two deer incidents.

My guess is that they both have the components of Active Guard, but the ADAP adds components. Over a small number of tests, there was one instance of a stop a few cms beyond the theoretical stopping point.

The data that is posted on the IIHS website looks pretty bad when the DAP package is added. |
