Bimmercode cable or adapter?

Hi guys

Used Carly for donkeys on my old beemers, now with the G20 Ive given up they will release codings anytime soon.

Got Bimmercode with an Android phone. Wondering what safest or most future proof option is? I have a vGate Wifi but it won't work. Is USB C + Enet cable my best option? Or are the OBD Link adapters better?

Thanks

No wired cable for android unfortunately. Only for apple. Best bet is a WiFi enet adapter. Or obdlink or unicarscan if you’re going Bluetooth and want access to all modules.

There is, shows under the Android tab for Enet adapter and a USB C to Ethernet from Amazon

Joedeejay ,

For some reason, I can't get to Bimmercode page (tried on both phone & PC). Can you send the Amazon link?

Thanks

Would do except I can't either hah. Think their server is down. It was a page to an Anker USB C to Ethernet adapter, and then just a generic page of search results for Enet adapter. The adapter was out of stock in the UK. Taken the plunge and bought the following

Enet Cable

USB C to Ethernet adapter

Edit: page working

Enet adapter link from Bimmercode - https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=New+2M+...ef=as_li_ss_tl

USB C to Ethernet from Bimmercode - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07S6LYN...amazonuk0f6-21

He just replied to me, I asked about Android and wired adapter with modules

"Hi,
wired ENET connection will allow access to all supported control units, yes.

Kind regards / Schöne Grüße

Joedeejay ,

Beaucoup Thanks!!

Indeed, the server came back up and I ordered the one on the Bimmercode site, made by Anker; here is the URL for the item on US Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Should get it tomorrow & will try with my existing Ethernet cable that I have used with E-Sys & ProLauncher on both my F30 & now G20

Will let all know how it works

Connection seems bit faffy but..

ENET cable connection
Please make sure your Android device supports an ethernet connection and allows to use a static IP address. Otherwise this connection type is not supported.

Connect the ENET cable with your Android device using an appropriate USB to Ethernet adapter.
Connect the cable to the OBD port in the footwell on the driver side in the car.
Enable “Static IP“ in the Android Ethernet settings(“Connections“ > “More connection settings“ > “Ethernet“ > “Configure Ethernet device“ > “Static IP“) and make the following entries:
IP Address: 169.254.250.250
Netmask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway: 0.0.0.0
DNS address: 0.0.0.0
Disconnect the cable and connect it again to make the changes take effect.
Open the settings in the BimmerCode app and make sure the correct adapter type is selected.
Tap “Connect” on the start screen in the BimmerCode app.
Upon first use a dialog is displayed and you have to allow BimmerCode access to the UBS device. Please confirm with “OK“ and then tap “Connect” again.

Can’t comment on what is or not available for android but on a iPhone I went from a BT adapter to a cable and it’s MUCH faster in every way.

I just noticed it. It seems to be a new addition I think I'll be going that route now.

Mine arrived today, unfortunately can't for the life of me find out how to set a static IP when on ethernet connection. Not sure it's possible on a Huwaei P30 Pro. Dropped Bimmercode an email before I lose hope and have to go down the more expensive WiFi route. Don't fancy Bluetooth, Carly used to take an age coding that way

Just did a Google search and apparently my phone doesn't support Ethernet either. FML. I ordered the cable last night. I'll try it when I get it on Friday and return it if it doesn't work. Only Samsung and a few other phones support it. My OnePlus 6T doesn't since apparently no one uses Ethernet anymore.

I could connect to my router via ethernet on the phone but there is no way to change/configure the Static IP side of things. Annoying because I can set a static IP for WiFi connections. Gutted, it's the cheapest way to do it too

When you connect your phone using the usb c and Ethernet cable and open bimmercode, what does it say?

Just says "the connection to the car could not be established. Please make sure your device is connected to the ENET cable, airplane mode is turned on and the cable is connected to the car"

Joedeejay & VipinLJ ,

Well, I got the USB-C to Ethernet adapter from Amazon, Anker USB C to Ethernet Adapter,... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07S6LYNC4...p_mob_ap_share

I hooked it up to my ENet cable (that I've used with E-Sys) & then to my Samsung S8. Using the settings you provided, established the connection. When I fired up Bimmercode, I went to settings & couldn't find an Ethernet connection-- so I sent Stephan a message.

Looking good, BUT more to follow!

I just got my USB C cable today. I need to dig up my enet cable but I'm not too hopeful. I googled my phone details online and apparently it doesn't support enet. I might get a Samsung Galaxy for coding. Let me check it out.
And keep us posted RSnic

On bimmercode - Settings - Adapter - ENET Cable

You got that selected?

Edit: is your phone in Airplane mode as well?

Joedeejay & VipinLJ ,

EEXCELSIOR!! (and I don't mean make all check payable to the state of New York -- an old joke of years gone by :-) )

I didn't hear anything back from Stephan so I tried something on my own this morning (PLEASE NOTE: I had previously set up Ethernet connection on my phone as above):
  • First I connected my ENet cable to my Ethernet to USB-C adapter
  • Then I connected USB-C end of adapter to my phone
  • I opened Bimmercode, clicked on the 3 vertical dots in upper right corner, selected SETTINGS, clicked on the exisiting Adapter, getting a list of adapters, selected MHD ENET (black), closed settings & Bimmercode
  • Next I put phone in Airplane mode (MORE TO FOLLOW ON THAT)
  • Then I connected the OBDII end of cable to car
  • I opened Bimmercode & clicked on CONNECT button, BUT I got a dialog box telling me to turn on WiFi -- so I closed Bimmercode & came out of Airplane mode
  • Opened Bimmercode again, pressed CONNECT button
  • Bimmercode worked super fast & WELL (see below for what I coded)

So, Joedeejay , your instructions were spot on except for turning on Airplane mode!!!

In another thread on this forum, I saw where someone had activated a new audio menu; so I thought I'd give that a try with my HK system. Using Bimmercode (connected as above), I opened Head Unit (HG_MGU), found 3002 AUDIO BROADCAST (NB, not 2002 Audio System); opened that & clicked on Audio-System & changed Alev3RAM (for my car with HK, I guess) to Alev4RAM); and finally clicked on CODE in upper right

So, if you have a Samsung S8, go to SETTINGS, CONNECTIONS, MORE CONNECTION SETTINGS, then ETHERNET (greyed out until you connect cable to phone -- BUT don't need to be connected to car) & enter information as above from Joedeejay

Now I know it works for Samsung S8, BUT honestly am not sure about other Android phones -- best bet is to check & see if you have a greyed out Ethernet entry before you get the adapter (link posted in previous post)

BTW, the new audio menu is terrific

Hope that helps!!

How bizarre. The MHD Enet option is a WiFi adapter thats why it told you to turn WiFi on for it. Used the old MHD orange to tune my F22.

Reason you turn airplane mode on is so it forces the phone to connect via ethernet for data and doesn't try WiFi or Mobile Data connections.

Just used a friend's Samsung tablet. Worked a treat and exactly as the instructions were listed from Bimmercode with ENET Cable selected on the app. None of that weirdness you experienced RSnic hah. Unbelievably fast to code compared to the old vGate WiFi adapter
