M1 & M2 button retrofit question.

Anyone have done this with kits from aliexpress and can shed some light on the subject? I saw a few videos but doesn’t really explain what each button do.

Specifically, I want to know if it can toggle between different modes within Sport. I have my car coded to start in Sport Individual but I want to sometimes quickly toggle it from Sport Individual to Sport Standard and back. All the videos that I’ve seen just goes from Sport, Eco, and Comfort.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You can assign each button with an engine, gear shift and steering mode.

That´s not possible in a normal G2x, only in the G8x cars.
The Ali buttons can only switch between driving modes.

I bought the one from Infinite Autowerks and it toggles between sport, sport + and sport as well as comfort eco and adaptive.

It came with very clear instructions for install as well. I have heard horror stories about the ali ones not working and no support from sellers so I went with IAW. thier price was actually better than ali when I got them on sale.

That’s not even that much from the Ali price…

But quick question: so specifically, say I’m in Sport Individual, pressing M1 (or M2) will switch me to Sport Standard, and then pressing the other button will switch me back to Sport Individual? Can it work like that?

If not, what does the M1 and M2 does specifically?

make sure you are selecting the right one on ali and youll see the price changes. ali tends to lure people in with a low price on only part of the product such as paddle or trim and then for the part you really want it is more. bait and switch.

the left m1 on mine toggles through all the sports, and the right m2 toggles back to comfort then eco. then when in eco, the left m1 changes back to comfort and then to sport. think of a slider and the m1 and m2 slide each way.

Thanks for clarification. So basically, if I start in Sport Individual, pressing M1 would cycle through just the sport modes correct? I don't really use the other modes.

And thanks for the heads up about pricing. I see them all about $110 and $137 with a decorative center piece to make the M Sport steering wheel look like a real M (hole under the steering wheel heater button).

Update:
All done. A little tedious but nothing super difficult. Buttons feels nice. Never felt the originals in a real M so can’t compare. I took my time and total about 1 hour. Changed the small bit on the steering wheel (where the heater button is) as well. Overall, money well spent!

How is the cycling, I only use sport plus or comfort, can you quickly go between these or do you have to cycle through all the modes?

Yes. When you’re in Comfort, pressing M1 will put you in the last used Sport mode. Pressing M2 will put you back into Comfort.

When in Sport mode, pressing M1 repeatedly will cycle through the Sport modes.

Do you think it is doable for a first-timer? Never done any work on a car before. I am capable of following a video tutorial

I will admit it’s a little more involved than replacing some interior bulbs with LEDs. You don’t have to have experience working on cars (usually implying something under the hood), but you should have some basic understanding of taking electronics apart, and putting it back together. The right tools will help a great deal as well. If you don’t feel comfortable doing those, I would ask a local shop (one that does stereos would work) and ask them to install it. Shouldn’t take more than an hour’s worth of labor. No coding needed.

I will add that installing it is not the hardest part. Hardest part is doing it without any damage to your trim pieces or connectors. Sure you can take a flat screwdriver and pry the center console trim out, but that will likely put marks on the trim. Having some trim removal tools will minimize that chance. Experience will help a great bit as well. You will also be removing some connectors and replacing a pin on the shifter connector.

Also, you should disconnect the battery because you’ll be removing the airbag. And you need to do that with the hood open.

Did you go with the IAW or Ali version? Also did it throw any codes / error msgs when you installed it, assuming you disconnected the battery?

It would be great if you could post a pdf of the installation instructions so that we can see what it entails.

I got the Ali version. Specifically this one.

They will give you an installation video. It's really not that complicated. Just a little tedious. There are also plenty of videos on YouTube on how to take the airbag off and disassemble the center console to access the cables under the shifter. Again, the hardest part is trying to not scratch up your trims while doing all this. Get some trim removal tools if you don't have them. Get some towels to lay down your shifter assembly after you take it out. Just common sense stuff like that will keep your trims looking new.

Just did the same retrofit on my own car myself this evening. One of my favorite mod yet. The buttons by the gearshift is so distracting to toggle through than just having them in front of you. Thankfully my kit was plug n play and went with the oem buttons. Feels so nice!!

Anyone have issues with units draining the batteries?

Getting the following code a month after install and trying to determine if this mod could be the culprit?
