Rim Protectors
Hi,
I hate to say it, but with the cr***y weather of late, we have gotten rim rash on 2 wheels of 20 M340 with 791M wheels. I know, I know should be careful & use side view mirrors, BUT as the saying goes, "Kaka occurs!" In that case does anyone have any recommendations on some good rim protectors? Thanks

Did you find any?
I did the same on one of mine. Never done it on a car before. I think the wheel/tyre combination coming from the factory is one where the tyre is not proud of the wheel enough to protect it, or maybe because the tyres are such a low profile brings the wheel down low enough to catch the curb. Or both those things. |

Did you just censor the word "crappy"?

@hottroc ,
Unfortunately, I haven't I checked with Rim Blades, but as they told me they won't work on my wheels because of the small gaps in rim where spokes connect (M791 wheels). Since I had a bad experience with my F30 with rim Protectors (bought from a reputable place, followed installation guidelines, let cure, but came off in a week or less), I've been cautious. I used extra fine wheel on my Dremel tool & 1500 sandpaper to buff out dings (see my post on another thread) & had them re-created with ceramic Having said that, am still looking for rim Protectors

I believe I have the same wheels as you. They are lovely wheels.
I've sanded out my rash but it has left the allloy area concerned a little dull. I could just coat with polish and/or ceramic but I was wondering if the wheels initially had a top-coat of clear lacquer? If so I'd do that first. If you do manage to find rim-protectors drop me a PM as I too can see this happening again. The wheels are low-profile so line up with the curb and the tyres not fat enough to protect. I have the run-flats, maybe that's why there's no bulge in the tyre like a normal tyre. |

Thanks.
So my plan is to polish with Brasso, then apply a top coat or two (I have a touch up stick of clear lacquer rather than spray but think it will do), then a coat of proper polish (and ceramic eventually). Does that sound right? |

Sounds right although I would make sure you get any oil residue off after using brasso and before you apply the clear lacquer.

Yes, that would do it.
Before you do it use as fine a wet and dry sandpaper you can get 2500 or greater will help give it a really smooth surface and better shine of the dull surface.

I agree with @Tam the Bam! After using my Dremel tool with 400 grit wheel, I then used 1500 & finally 3000 grit sandpaper. You can then use something like Brasso and wipe with Isoprpyl Alcohol (at least 71%) before clear coating. Will do on sending you PM if I find Rim Protectros; please do the same Thanks

Thanks guys. 1500 grade is the finest I've got at the moment but I'll see if I can get out to Halfrauds to get some 3000.
Another query, are all clear lacquers the same? Think the one I have is a Nissan one, presume it will do? |

Hmm, don't think Halfords sell 3000 grade, might have to search on ebay.

Having looked at the wheels again, they are not ultra-shiny like chrome, it's more of a slightly brushed effect. So I'm thinking the higher grade sandpapers might not be a good idea.
Any tips on how to get that effect? They are totally smooth but looks more like a semi-polished aluminium, I'm wondering if it should be left a little rougher then smoothed with the top coat? |

Thanks for your advice, I'll have to try with a different grade.
The rim looks finer than the spokes. I was only supposed to be repairing the rim but caught a couple of spokes a few times with the sandpaper which has taken the shine off. The brushed effect is more prominent on the spokes but I don't want to risk sanding them much more, I'll end up having to do the whole wheel, then the other 3 to match lol. |
