BMW Actively Worked to Differentiate the New 3 Series from the 5 Series
The all-new G20 3 Series has been unveiled for less than a week at the time of writing and there has been both praise and criticisms with its design.

For BMW, however, it was important that among the criticisms, none would be that the G20 3 Series was too similar in design to the G30 5 Series.

In an interview at the 2018 Paris Motor Show with motoring.com.au, the Product Manager of the G20 3 Series, Stephan Horn, cites past criticism, such as complaints of the F30 3 Series being too similar in design to the F10 5 Series, as a motivating factor in the conscious effort to differentiate the new G20 from the G30.

“There was some criticism in the past generations, looking for example from the rear at the 3 Series and 5 Series,” says Horn.

“They looked quite similar so we said this car had to look completely different from every angle compared to the predecessor and the 5 Series.”

“It has to be recognizable as a 3 Series sports sedan.”

Horn mentions the reactions stemming from such similarity from both 3 Series and 5 Series owners in the past.

“Sure, we do market research and some of the 3 Series buyers, they were flattered a little bit, because people were thinking they were driving the 5 Series.”

“Some of the 5 Series drivers were not so flattered…”

“But we just want to keep each model as independent as possible.”

Although the new G20 3 Series has grown in size compared to its predecessor, Horn explains that efforts were made to keep this increase to a minimal, so as to represent the 3 Series' as a sports sedan and not as a mini-5 Series.

“Our overall goal was to make the car as compact as possible,” says Horn. “We were really fighting about every millimeter in terms of extension."

“We are the ultimate sports sedan, we are not a small 5 Series and for having a sports sedan you don’t want to have big, long car whatsoever.”

“I think in the last generation the criticism of 3 and 5 Series was right, but we believe in this generation we won’t have this discussion. The whole design language is totally different to the 5 Series.”

I did immediately note that the new 3 looked quite different from the new 5 (thankfully!). The new 5's exterior looks totally pedestrian to me. If the new 3 looked like that, I would have had a hard time considering buying one.

G20 definitely has some never-before-seen design features.
But I'll reserve judgement about it's 'intentional' differences after
I see what the LCI 5 looks like in about 2 years.

Here's a good comparison video of the G20 vs the G30. I think overall the G20 looks better and a better representation of the future BMW styling cues. The G30 will look older faster like the F10.

The G30 is very plain looking, even the M5 is pretty much invisible in traffic. From the few in traffic pictures it seems the G20 is more of a standout.

Most M5s it takes me a while to notice and even then by only looking at the number of tailpipes.

G30 looks like an enlarged F30 with chrome accents everywhere.

I think the G20 does look pretty different.

The general public would be very hard pressed to tell these cars apart.

I meant from the back/side. Yeah those fronts look very similar... I think the width is now less than 2in difference.

One time I drove some friends to restaurants and they walked back to a LCI E90 in the parking lot thinking it was my F30. So you're right most BMWs look alike to the general public.

I for one have been able to differentiate the models but I see the argument here. Only can imagine what Merc drivers think on their end.

This is interesting because when I saw the new G20 on the street recently, the first thing I thought was it resembled the 5er. This was purely from the front, it's very wide looking and for a minute I didn't know if it was a 5er or the new 3, and I'm a big BMW fan and follow their designs closely.

Yes G20 looks pretty different from BMW. It looks like Peugeot from front and Audi from back.. 😁

Too true, the C and E class are separated by an extra day time light in the front, without badges I can barely tell and I am a car guy!

Yeah besides the new light design, anytime I see a side profile or from the rear I think they're all an E class. Heck S class sometimes. I bet there S-class E-class owners are pissed

Absolutely. Then Audi have used that formula for years! Especially the A4/6.

Extremely true! I just think the VW group like the chassis' they've built because everything looks exactly the same. Give or take a few lines. I actually thought the new passats/jettas were Audi's. Even their Bentley segment is starting to look like Audi's. The new GT is what would've been an A7 coupe.

I think they're leaving the more eye catching tailights for their higher up models. Probably 7 and above
