BMW's hand is forced by the market and also the electrification of all drivetrains, coming soon.
What is perplexing is they will offer a manual in a large GT coupe but they don't offer a manual in the new Z4, their only actual sports car. |

Glad to hear it; I hope it pertains to the M3 as well. I appreciate M's commitment to the MT. From a purely business standpoint, they could have already killed it. For an independent car company that doesn't have VW resources behind it, I'm impressed.
Of course, I will bitch as much as the next guy when M does actually kill the MT...

Thanks for posting this one. This is the single best clip I have every seen on the virtues of a manual transmission.

Yes, it is a great video, thanks for posting. I actually enjoy the DCT in my E90 M3, especially when I am driving near the limit or on a track. However, for most driving situations (stuck in a line of cars on a steep hill with the guy behind you hugging your bumper not included) a manual adds another layer of engagement with the car that I really missed. I recently put my money where my mouth is and picked up one of the last F30 manuals as a DD. Loving it so far, but check back with me in 3 years.

My 15yo son just had his first stick shift lesson last week, in my M3. I cannot accurately portray the excitement he felt, the elation of finally getting shifts right. Both of us will treasure these moments for a long time.
And he wants a stick shift for his first car. I just love him... By the time he gets the full experience under his belt, 10-15 years down the line, manual and automated gearboxes along with the ICE will go the way of the dodo, replaced by electric cars with single speed gearing. And yes, automated pilots. But at least he’ll have fun those ten years.

Look at the classifieds. You guys are talking about individual experiences and over the years is not now. Manual has a way smaller buyer pool for a F80 gen that has already become hard to move.

The previous gen may not have been, but the new one is a much better chassis to start from than the 2/3/4 series and the M40i runs the ring in the same time as the M2. You can laugh at the Supra also but I have a feeling it's going to be more of a sports car than every current BMW product.

Two generations from now the M3/4 will most likely be electric so this befitting without question.
I personally look forward to the first plugin hybrid beast made by ///M GmbH.

For example well over half the M2's were manual transmissions. Look up the numbers it's higher than you realize.

Easiest way for any automotive executive to get free press in the USA is to talk about manual transmissions and promise to keep them alive. I like choices so I will always be in favor of both a great automated transmission and a great manual. Fact is BMW isn't going to develop a new manual transmission and while sales of manuals are a good reason to keep them in the USA there will be a time where they won't be feasible. Don't think that is anytime soon.
Fact is none of us know if we will be alive or healthy in a 5 years, 1 year or even 1 week. Buy the car you like, fits your needs, and give the "manuals rule" "there goes the resale value of F80 manuals" etc, etc a rest. No you aren't saving the world by buying a manual transmission, you're not an artist because you can drive a manual. There are frankly far greater tragedies than a manufacture not offering multiple transmissions in every car they make. |

All you guys with small sons that are so worried they won't get to experience a manual should stop and think for a minute. By the time they are ready to drive, they more than likely won't care about cars. This new generation is all about saving the world and going electric. They will be the first to boycott the combustion engine mark my words. In 13 years my boy will be 18 there may very well be as many electric cars on the road than gas powered. If not then maybe a few years later. It's all over, guys. By 2050 combustion engines will be banned. I submit to you that we are the last of the Mohicans!!! We are the last ones to have grown up adoring gas powered cars. The new generation will not be interested anymore.

Lol, Good luck finding a dealer that doesn't already have a list of guys with deposits for the CSL. I'm 2nd on a list at my dealership behind a guy who put his deposit down in 2016 before the first OG F87 even arrived in North America. Last time I checked there are 4 more behind me for a total of 6 and there's no way that dealership is getting 6 allocations. Also no guarantee that (IF made) the CSL will even be offered in MT...in which case I will likely give up my spot to the next guy. I like driving manual, I do have an auto in my DD SUV, but it's always nice to climb into the M2 and row, row, row my speedboat not so gently down the stream if you know what I mean.

THIS. I hate this feature and it kept me away from a MT F80/82.

Does it really matter anymore. Torque monster turbo engines with diesel like low end grunt in a digital driving environment with computer controlled rev match shifting - using a manual in modern cars is hardly any more tactile than flapping a paddle.
It's not like the old days, with high strung NA engines that you get to wind out and have to heel/toe downshift to keep in the power band. |
