Same reason why tracked 911s are seldom AWD.
I understand completely but I cannot imagine that the biggest part of the target audience are 'those that track the car'.

Less and less M3 owners track their cars as new generations come, but different eras of M3 is always enjoyable in a "M3 unique" sense.

Aggregating the recent test drive of F90 M5, I am not sure I would enjoy the "lesser M5" experience as opposed to "M3" experience- the biggest reason why I am not that excited about these rumors about G80. They hardly scream innovation and uniqueness.

While track driving is certainly not the absolute majority, it is much greater in number compared to owners of other German equivalents.

M stands for motorsport and M3 was always the halo model that taught wide range of owners (beginners to advanced drivers) to drive fast safely in a controlled environment, gradually realizing the awesome balance of the car as you start to relieve of traction control and more on driver instincts, experience and the natural balance of the car- translating to the ultimate driving experience.

Let's keep it that way.

If BMW would only take into account the needs for those that want an M3/M4 for the track they would need to build cars that are going to be twice as expensive imho what the M3/M4 GTS are intended for. The M3/M4 is great performance car with excellend build quality and tech under the hood and the interior, ... It combines the best of so many worlds at an acceptable price range.

Can anyone explain to me why do they need to have a rwd version of the M3 too if they have an AWD one?

Maybe it's already been mentioned in this marathon thread but it seems obvious to me why BMW is calling the manual RWD model "pure" instead of base... because it will likely cost more than the auto AWD version.

Taking a page from the Porsche marketing handbook. Take a bunch of costs out of the car and charge a premium, and people will inexplicably agree to buy it without question.

All that being said, I want one! The only way I want my M3 is with 3 pedals.

they already sell 'pure' badged cars in australia of the last gen and they cost less than the normal versions. from what I remember it is 7-8% less sticker

Have you seen this kind of reshuffling before?

Do think they are trying to actively obfuscate information in the run up to reveal to cut down on leaks? Meaning nothing has really changed behind the scenes.

Or possibly are actually changing things up as a reaction to feedback from the leaks or adjustments to their strategy?

In https://g20.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1614384 the M boss "last week" said:

“I can’t confirm it [RWD and AWD M3], but I’ve driven cars,” Flasch admits.

“We were able to take over the entire drivetrain concept that we offer in the M5, and we are able to do rear-wheel drive version as well, plus manual transmission."

“I won’t disclose today how we configure those opportunities, but we can do whatever the markets globally demand."

“We got it. We can’t confirm that we’ll bring it, but we got it.”

So kinda sounds like if enough people write in/complain to BMW they will reconsider, dunno.

No and yes. For the first time, I'm seeing placeholders instead of true info.

Maybe they're tired of all the leaks and is trying to hide info from ynguldyn.

Weight. They are going to introduce new weight saving measures, only to be offset by a heavy complicated awd system.

if the market of people who want RWD only car is large enough. it will be for profit. it isnt a technical advancement in anyway. more a buisness decision in my opinion.

So the new M3 might have an automatic transmission, AWD, and a giant grille? Unique!

Maybe I shouldnt have gotten rid of my F80 6MT in favor of a CS...I assumed I would be getting back into a 6MT in 2 years tops.

Meh - why can't they just give us the M5's drivetrain where we can switch between AWD and RWD. Seems to be the obvious answer here.

Same reason they "need" a manual transmission when they have a dual-clutch version.
