They should just go back to showing the car taking turns and accelerating on PCH near Big Sur, then shows the wording "Ultimate Driving Machine". Done. This ad is embarrassing.

I was 99% sure it was an Apple Airpod commercial during the first 10 seconds. I guess they're going after the same demographic.

At :46 the exhaust note is clearly from a B58 but they're driving a 330i, although that's the kinda thing only forum nerds will notice.

I'm with you but I'll play devil's advocate. Taking corners fast with the windows down on PCH is not what modern customers care about. In reality they are tech and image obsessed. The best way to showcase the car's tech in an urban setting.

On a side note, anybody remember this commercial from around '05? I was a young teen at that time and loved it.

They don't want to buy cars anymore especially a BMW 3 series, they are spending their money on experiences, Tesla and Kombucha. BMW needs to bring back the customers who actually have money to spend.

Trust me, tech people are not impressed with BMW's "tech". We don't even have Android Auto.

Exactly, missed to deliver the message to those who actually buy BMW and not going to touch hipsters with airpods, Uber shortcuts, skinny jeans and bus passes

Except it's not? G20 330i gets dual exhausts. The B58 is in the M340i and that has different exhaust tips.

Or do you mean the sound by "exhaust"?

The first commercial video can be best described as perplexing. Remove the vehicle, insert Apple's iPod, and creative agency can reuse the same footage to serve both BMW and Apple while increasing profit margins. Did not find it appealing or engaging.

The casting director did an excellent job choosing dancers for the commercial. Then again Lady Gaga also chose great dancers for her tour.

Sheer Driving Pleasure is the international and global tag line for BMW.
The Ultimate Driving Machine is only utilised in English Speaking markets such as the regional UK,North America etc.
Globally its "Sheer Driving Pleasure" and has been since the E65 was introduced in 2001.

Try this test...imagine almost any other "contemporary" new car in the spot instead of the 3 Series. Is the spot as credible/persuasive/compelling...no more/no less? If so, it's bad advertising, per se. Good creative that is on-strategy should be specific to the brand. If you think back to when BMW strongly promoted the Ultimate Driving Machine in copy and art, you wouldn't find it credible with a Buick in the spot instead.
Correct on all accounts. Objectively speaking, this is a terrible ad. Terrible because it either (a) didn't accomplish what it set out to do or (b) set out to do something stupid and succeeded. And I'm thinking about their target audience here - not the ///M crowd and not enthusiasts.

I still find it amazing that ad agency teams + brand marketing teams can see something like this and all nod their heads and go, "Yep! That's the one." Yet, it happens all the time. Ultimately, the brand marketing execs are accountable for green-lighting this and for not giving the agency better direction or for not telling the agency to try again if this isn't what they were supposed to do. I suspect the brand marketing team got exactly what they wanted, however, which makes me believe they have no clue what they're doing.

I'd like to have been in the room from start to finish on this project just to feel what it's like to watch a disaster unfolding in real time.

How does this happen when talented, passionate people all over the world would love to work at BMW? So much of what's happening at BMW feels like a case study of what happens when top leadership at a company is inept. The smart, passionate people at BMW who understand the brand must be so frustrated...

This ad could almost work for x1 and x2 - the most useless cars in BMW lineup... Never mind not even for them.

Hit the nail on the head, especially these sections. I sit back and think, a company like BMW, on launch of what will be their best selling product should absolutely nail an advertisement like this. Like you say, I just needed to be there in those meetings and listen to the conversation they must have had to come up with an ad like this...and meet the people that signed this off thinking its a job well done. This is more like something a team from The Apprentice would churn out
