Funny this thread made me feel my outside door pockets! Yes the outside is soft touch and the inside is hard plastic as it should be. I have sat in a G20, but before this thread was written, so I did not feel the door pockets. All I can say is the G20 interior is light years luxurious over my E90. In fact getting back into my E90 (a car with 170,000 miles on it that I still love) I noticed how outdated my interior is after 8 years of buying it new and 13 model years later!

Agree, I sense some users are so out of date to what BMW have been doing for a few years. Plus a different finish doesn't mean cost cutting, or a cheaper finish.
Some need to take a closer look at other BMW models, including above the 3 series level. Even models like my 2011 build F11 5-series has a harder feeling lower door card/pocket finish. It is not rigid plastic, is textured and has yield to it, but is hard wearing. The F10 received praise for its quality finish when launched. |

The G30 interior is a very nice place to be thanks to its high quality cabin materials and meticulous finish.

Getting back to the G20, seems perceptions are so different. We have folks saying the G20 is even better quality/finish than the G30, others saying the G20 is further down market and cost cutting than the F30. Which again, has a wide scope of comment on what quality users feel it exhibits. So what is it? The G20 has either moved further up market in fit and finish, or it hasn't. Or are we simply stating preferences, which means very little when we look for actual measures of quality. |

I made the trip to the dealer MYSELF. The material seems sort of middle ground between that which was on the F30 and what I consider to be the worst of the worst (the bottom of the door on a 2016 X3). I am pleased to say that the material on the G20 seems to have the same OUTER layer as that which the F30 had but it appears to be lacking the padding underneath. The F30 was a sandwich of hard plastic, padding in the middle and the softer outer vinyl type layer. The G20 has the hard plastic underneath and the soft vinyl exterior but no padding underneath. Since it is not raw, hard, cheap plastic (which was what I feared) I can live with it. As other posters have indicated, the carpet lining in the bin is also gone but that is not such a deal breaker for me.
