I was worried my tune was making the car burn a bunch of oil since I was "researching" the new limits of my car.

Just got my 2nd low oil warning message - First one was at 4900, and now at 7000. I put in just over a half quart of oil the first time, and this time the rest of that first bottle, and almost a half of another. Anyone try 0w30 or 0w40 oil and does it work any better to avoid get this warning?

I used 0w30 and still got low light warning last time. In-fact, both times I added a quart it was 0W30 oil.

My father in law also has a m340i and had to take it in for oil around 3000 miles. I just got my car with 3000 miles and believe they changed the oil before purchase so I'm still showing max. He mentioned I might not have the oil issue because I got the ZTK cooling and HP tire package. Can't confirm but for those experiencing the fast oil usage do you have the extra cooler option? Wondering if this is a must on this car..

ZTK here and still guzzles oil..

It's my brother's car, whom I've convince to get it. He's pretty upset and now because of the oil consumption issue and wants to trade it in today, like immediately at only 8,000 miles..

I had him wait it out but it seems he's heading in that direction because he's a puss, who knows little about cars and feel the engine is going to go soon, due to the consumption

Hmm guess that might not solve this...

Hahaha! Wont anything major be covered under the 4 year 50000 mile warranty?

Poochie did he not leased it? I lose no sleep over this. Maybe if i had purchased but mine is a lease and aside from this small inconvenience, car is a blast to drive. If engine blows, i get a another one lol and do a custom order instead of buying off the lot like my current.

No, he bought it off the lot and didn't even want a BMW because be heard they were unreliable but I convinced him that it's a great car with a robust motor and also because I'm a fanatic, that never had an issue with any of my BMWs or Minis, now this makes me look bad..

It's paid off and the title is free and clear but I heard whispers that he's not happy about this old burning situation and went to trade it in behind my back, although I'm usually who everyone goes to for car advice.

Anyways, whatever, you can't change people's mind when it's already made up. I'll just let him get that Audi S5 he's been eyeing and let it be.

For anyone else reading this, just sharing a personal story and not trying to scare anyone or sway them either way on this vehicle.

There is still 4 years of insurance, should any issue regarding this surfaces.

I understand man, at the end of the end, it's whatever makes him happy lol. I looking forward to your S5 review soon, especially how it compares to our car. Cheer!

For people who top it off at home, what kind of oil are you using? Anyone add Mobil 1 0w-40 European formula?

I added 0w40, Mobil 1 after my first low oil warning because I couldn’t find 0w20 or 0w30 in a number of auto parts stores and gas stations I tried. No issues other than a second low oil warning approximately 3k miles later - added the factory recommended 0w20 that time. Will likely make a bulk purchase of 0w30 soon and stick with that for future top offs.

I have used 0W30 Castrol European formula; also I have my first Oil service scheduled for next weekend. Car has about 8300 miles as of today with about 600 miles left to get Oil service done, so i should be able to add another 300 miles by then.

I honestly don't believe the oil weight makes much of a discernible difference, in relation to our aforementioned excessive oil burning issue..

Some folks are just experience the placebo effect..

Update; 919 miles after they discovered it burned 1.26qt of oil over 1000 miles and replaced the valve cover gasket as instructed by hq.. I have now gotten my 5th "oil at minimum level" warning at 6673mi on the car.

Not sure where I am going to go from here, I was supposed to have an oil change last week but I bumped it up to the end of the month since I was nearing the 1000mi mark since the last service.

That's worse than mine. I am at 8500 miles and only had to top off 3 times, last time at 7100 miles. This weekend the car goes in for it's first oil service. Can't wait to see if things improve after the service.

Seeing as they drained and physically measured my oil level, I don't imagine an oil change would have a big impact on the issue if you are actually burning oil and its not just a bad sensor.

Well, the first oil service just got done this morning, they also did a front axle recall thing. Car now has approximately 8600 miles, let's see how the oil consumption behaves from here on-wards.

Ps. Rapture, I hope yours get sorted, keep us posted, thanks.

The dealership is stating that BMW wants them to put the car back together, give it back to me, and deal with it after 10,000mi stating that only after 10k can a true oil consumption test be preformed.

"Your vehicle currently has 6690 miles on it and since it looks like its burning almost a liter every 1000 miles its up to you if you want to keep bringing the vehicle over each time for the next 3 times until it reaches 10,000mi or we can keep topping it off"

Which could be the better part of 6mo for me since I clearly do not drive much.

One part of the message irked me at the end, "It is also due for an oil service this visit and the tech will mark everything again to make sure it isnt getting tampered with"

This felt accusatory as if I was causing this purposefully because I want to keep coming in every 1000mi or something.
