19" or 18" wheels? Performance(summer) or all-season?
Hi guys, I'm considering ordering an M340i. It's really hard for me to decide what wheels to choose. What I care most is not their performance on track, instead, I care a lot about ride quality (smooth, comfort, quiet). I only consider RFT.
I know perf/summer tires come with increased top speed limit and are staggered. But how do they compare to all season tires in terms of ride quality and noise? As far as I know, the tires on M340i are (all rfts): 18" & 19" a/s: Bridgestone Turanza LS 100A; pirelli P7 18" perf: Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 3, Michelin PS4 ZP (not PS4S) 19" perf: Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 3, Bridgestone Turanza T005 Any comments (good or bad) on those tires? |

The car looks good with 19 and the ride quality is surprisingly good. Out of all the tires you listed Michelin Ps 4s in by far the best tire . soft, quite ride with best dry and wet grip. It is non run flat so you need a plug kit to deal with flats.
It comes with Cooling pack and gives you mobility kit so you do nOt need a spare so you do not loose trunk space Summer tire is best for performace in over 40F. But in cold temps, especially under 32 you would loose performance and they are dangerous/ unrideble in the snow |

I would get summer tires just because it's staggered. You won't be able to put any power down especially if you're getting RWD. Why are you getting a M340i if your main concern is ride quality? Sounds like you should get a Lexus.

Would staggered mean more costly to repair/replace?

You cant rotate but it also depends on the tire and treadware so get a higher treadware, 300+ and keep the tires inflated at the correct PSI and they will last just fine. Rotating can help but not always the case, tires, alignment, proper air pressure in the tires, etc all factors in longevity.

I am on the same boat. My current configuration is 792M with all season runflats but I am thinking about switching to all season non runflat 18s.
This car will be nothing but a daily driver and I don't want to deal with the harshness of 19's on horrible Seattle roads and invisible pot holes filled with water on dark winter days. I am also assuming tire replacement will be much more cost effective on the 18s as well. Jury is still out, I might just go buy 18" take offs but then I am tired of storing a set of wheels in my garage.

I do believe that 18" is more cost efficient, but 18" seems nothing special for a ~60k M performance car |

When I speced my G20 M-Sport 330, I specifically decided on Sport Non-runflats. The Michelins Pilot sport 4S are one of the best summer tires even for daily driving, they are quieter and smoother compared to runflats. Of course it depends on quality of your local roads.
From my past experience with non-BMW vehicles, I had non-runflat sport all seasons tires from Michelin, and they still retain their similar, smooth quite ride performance, still great in dry and wet weather. For M340i, sport non-runflats would match perfectly. |

But having said that I just changed my order to 18" 790M with all season non RFTs. IMO the 18s look good on this car and it is less of a PIA for me for daily driving. Also, 18s are unique to M340 just like the 792 wheels. If I want a set of dedicated 19 or 20 summer tires, I might go aftermarket or look for take offs from folks on this forum. Far a daily / a lease, I am happy 18s and looking fw to a somewhat more comfortable ride.

Bumping thread to see how everyone feels about their decisions on 18 vs. 19 and RFT vs. non-RFT. Any regrets? I don’t have a strong preference, but I’m not a big fan of the style of the 18” rims. As far as tires go, I’m assuming performance tires are summer only. Correct?

I have staggered 791Ms with summer RFT... I need something to drive in the winter, but NL really doesn't get snow. I'm looking at some 18" BBS XRs with Michelin PS4 A/S for the "winter" here in a square setup in lieu of actual winter wheels.

It has been a year since I have taken delivery of my car with 18" go flats and I am LOVING them. No complaints at all besides the fact that it takes a while to clean them.
Also, over the summer we took a 5K mile road trip to MidWest and knowing the fact that I had a spare tire in the trunk made the whole experience a bit more better!

Mine came with the 790 18x7.5 wheel, All season, 225x45 tire. It is driving me absolutely crazy in terms of looks.
I have been looking at my options for a wider tire and wheel. The $$$ is a concern at this point, otherwise I would have jumped to something better right away. One question: has anyone tired a wider 18” Tire, like an 18x9” with a staggered aggressive setup. The reason I ask is because I think the 18” wheels and tires will be more economical than 19s. |
