Cerium Gray staining.

A corrosion like staining appeared on the cerium grill.
Dealer claims it's a material defect known to BMW and they are expecting to receive special chemical to clean it off.

Have anybody experienced similar issue?

That sucks. Hope you can get it fixed soon. I’d be looking at that every time I walked up to the car.

But it sounds strange that a "material defect" could be cleaned off.
(No sign of it on my M440). Would be interested to know how it is fixed.

It appeared suddenly after 2 years on the road, as I dry the car with the towel after every wash I know for sure it was not there until mid October, when I haven't washed for 3 weeks. there is no damage, so it is surface staining that will not come of with any soap or wax.

Now I can see small spots on the mirror cups as well, I will bug them for solution, if they not going to get the chemical I think they should replace grill under warranty and send it to BMW for investigation.

To me it looks like the Cerium (plating, coating, evaporated layer) was too thin and the underlying plastic is starting to show through. This might explain the "material defect" comment from the dealer and factory.

Have you used any kind of new sealant or wax lately on the paint (may have run down the hood)? Or perhaps changed the type of washer fluid?

No, the car is ceramic coated with System X Diamond, and washed with CarPro products.

It was in for the recall involving some phisical check and lubrication 2 days before I noticed it, but I have no evidence dealer did something, it is not a damage.

Went to original dealer I bought the car from, they have opened a Work Order and waiting for BMW for permission to carry work, I asked to replace the grill under bumper-to-bumper warranty.

No reply yet.

Well it took a while, but BMW approved grill replacement, it was done during scheduled maintenance visit.
Finally, looks like new again
