However, specifically on the B58 TU version in the M340i, this vehicle sips on oil, when you step on it. If you're conservative and drive like the stereotypical old lady, you might not notice any accelerated oil usage but like, what's the point

Other that this possible perceived shortcoming, the vehicle is very potent and runs like a champ, so I wouldn't automatically write this off as a defect but more, by design, as a necessity under heavy operation.

So I wouldn't let this discourage your purchase decision; you still have a 4 years and 50,000 miles of insurance, should any major flaws surface.

I would agree with you on this. However when I first had my light on was during break in period. Where I was driving like an old lady just so I wouldn't damage the engine for the next driver after my lease was up. I live in Los Angeles so, I am in traffic 85% of the time. There was no reason for the car to consume that much oil on light driving. I expect to be taking my car in for the 5th time. I have 11k miles on my car.

Came up on ours about 4k, added 1qt. Even says it can burn oil in the manual with aggressive driving or sporty driving.

Are you warming it up a bit before going.. cold climates?
Yea i agree i start my car to warm up every morning for 15 mins. Never driven it in cold start. I have 9089 miles on it now and no low oil indicator.....i will be headed for my first oil service @ 10k.

This website states their table of "acceptable" oil consumption data from BMW is 1 liter per 1,500 miles for B58 lol. It sounds pretty ridiculous but if it really came from BMW, I would assume the dealers are told the same thing. It also talks about "break-in" period right below their chart where BMW advises not to be too concerned about oil consumption during the first 10,000 miles.

I really dislike how this car initially burns/consumes oil, but I wouldn't waste time with the dealer if they are reluctant to look any further into the car.. Luckily my dealer has been helpful and did a full measure of the oil when they drained it during my last visit. They did a complete oil change during the visit and asked me to return after 2,000 miles to measure the consumption. Fingers crossed that the "break-in" is really true.

FYI, I topped off my oil the first two times the warning came on and even bought a case of oil to avoid inconvenience of visiting the dealers. I visited the dealers when the warning was not even on and they still helped me. If anyone is in the Socal area with the same issue, I would recommend Irvine BMW
Mine have 9k+ miles and never had the low oil indicator come on. I will be going in for my first oil change @ 10k. AS suggested earlier, do you drive the car in cold start? I've never driven mine in cold start; I start the car 15 mins before i head out. Just a suggestion.

It has nothing to do with letting car warm up. I live in South Florida, no cold climate here.

Still should allow the oil to reach operating temperature, I don't know what it is in Fahrenheit but it's about 110-120 Celsius here, I never push it over 3k rpm till that temperatures met.

90°C is considered as start of the operating oil temperature range.

Yea they were going to do this, but then the service manager happened to walk by and hear my complaints. He told the SA to document it and they will look into it. I was fortunate that this warning popped up the day I was turning in my car for my paddles as they repaired the paddles and it fell off my steering wheel.

So after they topped off my car with the 1 quart of oil, the service adviser and I sat in the car for 5 min. and no warning popped up. On the way home that same day, the message popped up again. It was less than 100 miles before the message popped up again. So I am not sure what is going on.

How many miles on your car? The light always goes away on mine as soon as I add a quart and reverts to showing full capacity.

Sometimes one quart doesn't cover the total oil deficiency..

I had a WTF moment when one full quart didn't get me to MAX..

Good luck, keep us posted. They should have checked the measurement after adding the quart to see if it needed more or at capacity at the time.

Did you check the measurement idrive ? Just curious to see what it shows. Maybe your sensor is bad. Hope you find a quick solution.

It might be a faulty sensor, because it gets up to 90% completed then it just resets to the menu screen prior to the test. Either way, the car is going in tomorrow at 8am.

I finally was able to complete the test, and this is what popped up.

My light came on twice (3k & 7k miles) I'm not sure if it's the way I drive with the combination of mods.

The dealer just text me the issue: The oil pressure sensor is bad and needs replacement. We have to order the new part, will need the car until tomorrow evening.

In the mean time, they loaned me a 2020 740i, and im loving it for a different reason. lol
