2021 and up G22 M440i reliability/issues
Hi all,
Apology if this has been asked before, but I couldn't find much info. There doesn't seem to be many long term/in-depth review of the G22 M440. I'm looking at a 2021 or newer G22 M440i, and I'm wondering if there are any known common issues or reliability issues? With the 48V mild hybrid system, would this powertrain be good for long term ownership (4+ years)? Which MY to avoid for covid caused option shortage? So far I've found some people have had issues with the steering notchiness that has to do with steering column and rack. Thank you for your input! |

Had my 2022 M440i for two and a half years with 13,000 miles. I have not had any problems except for the known problem of a poorly performing HK sound system and have been unable to get the dealer to swap out the amplifier...otherwise, a great drivers car...

Own mine for about 2 years and no major issue. Just a common one where if debris gets lodged near the dust shield, will create an awful screeching sound. Driving in reverse may dislodge and fix issue for some.
Also for me, low MPG in comfort mode. Last edited by chutoy; 04-06-2024 at 05:05 PM.. |

Low MPG? Is it due to your driving style or?

Is the issue because of the pandemic supply shortage? Or it's a one-off? Would a newer model year can have the same issue?

Yes, I have a lead foot, NYC stop and go traffic and I gas it a little at stop lights to turn off stop/start

Some issues you have to watch out for on both M440 and M340 is a leaky differential on the earlier models supposedly it’s common, my 2021 had it with 19k miles along with a leaking water pump that needed to be replaced. BMW claims the differential was overfilled from the factory and is leaking out of the breather tube on top. But some owners claim even after performing the reccommended service it would still leak and needed an upgraded diff cover to finally fix the problem. I’m keeping an eye on mine for now after the first visit as they didn’t replace the cover. I’ve had no other issues and didn’t even know my water pump was leaking until car went in for service.
Some 2022 models have touch screen delete due to supply chain issues during Covid. Best way to check for that is run a vin decoder and it will show up in there or make sure you test it when you actually test drive the car you’re interested in.

No, the original Amp was underpowered but the replacement was in short supply. My car came without passenger seat lumbar and got a $100 credit.

If the car is still under warranty even CPO then it’s covered. However like I said the dealer will first try to just clean it up and claim it just an over fill issue before going that route. So I’m just keeping an eye on mine to see if I need further service.

'21 M440i x Drive with 30000 mi. Only problem was total electric failure, both batteries dead. I was stranded. Towed to dealer, not sure what happened but 12 vdc battery was replaced and no problems since. BTW 37 mpg on highway, 25 in town, sport mode

2023 M440xi with 9K miles here.
The only annoying thing worth nothing is the chip shortage. So my Tailgate Kick to open feature was a delete. Other than that I LOVE the car. ECO Pro is pretty useless as you'll always get just as good if not better MPG in Comfort. |

Almost 16,000 miles since new in December 2020. Zero problems or issues. Will need tires soon.

‘21 m440ix with 14k miles. Bought it new. Came with every possible option except dynamic suspension. Had a bad front-facing traffic sensor from factory and replaced within the first few weeks. This thing is so solid. Long road trips through mountainous terrain in eco mode while fully loaded with luggage for 2 adults yields 36.8 mpg average.

While mine is new that everyone so far, 2024 M440i drive, I have almost 13K miles on it. So new but a decent number of miles.
Only issue I have had was the drivers window seal started whisling on the highway. I cleaned it with some Griots rubber cleaner and then Griots rubber conditioner, and no more whistling. |

I have been using Vinylex, which does not streak on exterior trim application, but I read 303 does. Is Griot rubber + vinyl dressing also streak-free? I tried VLR a bit but the smell was too leathery for rubber/vinyl application. |

I've had my '21 since new, no big issues, the HK stereo bass-less issue, and apparently the head-unit had a cable that wasn't connected in the back for some reason. Still runs great. Getting low 30's/high 20's MPG on the highway in AZ (typically cruising around 75-85mph).

When the 48V mild hybrid system was first released on the M340i/M440i, it had an issue where coolant would leak onto the belt/pulley for the electric motor. A TSB fixes it. Beyond that, these cars are extremely reliable. No known long term issues with the mild hybrid system.

Just had this happen to me a few weeks ago. Nice day with the windows down and heard it. Sounded like something was rubbing (more like cutting into) on the driver's side rotor. I backed up maybe 2 feet and the sound was gone.
