Next generation M3/M4 to be a hybrid?
There are (unsubstantiated) rumors that the next generation M3/M4 will be a hybrid, where the front wheels will be powered by electric motors. This would not be surprising.
Consider this: the Tesla Model 3 with its dual electric motors combining for a comparable 450 hp consistently clocks 0-60 times of 3.5 s. This is considerably faster than the M4 CP (and not far behind the 625 hp M5 CP). The instantaneous max torque delivery across across the entire rpm range offers huge advantages over a conventional IC engine. In addition, all-wheel drive M4 would naturally follow the evolution of most performance cars. Considering the stringent emissions requirements in the upcoming years, it’s only logical that BMW follow this path. Any thoughts? |

I'd be all for it, but only if it wasn't intrusive. The electrical assistance would need to be helping in the background, with the internal combustion feel of the car remaining.
Of course, to assist with fuel economy and acceleration times, they could stop making the cars the size of houses. If the E36 was a two bedder in the city, the E9x was a three bedroom suburban townhouse, and the G80 is a five bedroom mansion in the hills.

There are some very high performance hybrid cars. I see no reason to believe BMW can't build one. They already do with the i8.

By way of reliable inside information that you can find on this very website, the next generation M3/M4 will share its engine with the X3/X4 M, just like the M5 shares its engine with the X5/X6 M. We know that the X3/X4 M will be powered by a new S58 inline six. There will be no electric motor in the drivetrain, just as there is no electric motor in the M5 and X5/X6 M drivetrain. I should add that, it is still possible (though certainly not confirmed) that the new S58 will employ 48V mild hybrid technology as both Audi's and Mercedes' latest high output six cylinder engines do (though in different ways from one another), including the possibility of electric turbocharging. But that is very different from separate electric motors attached to the vehicle's drive wheels. Someday BMW M will build PHEV performance cars and then EV performance cars. But that day is not yet here. |
