Coding to turn in Apple Car Play

So rumor has it that Apple Car Play is now a service that's free the first year and $80/year after that. Is there a way to turn it on with coding after the first year to avoid the service fee? Not sure if it reports back to the mother ship that it is enabled and then the mothership blocks access to it. Is this now standard on all cars I did not see the option in the configurator.

It is free for the first year and then an additional cost afterwards. Not sure if it is codeable. I'm assuming that the subscription is added as a BMW connected option.

Honestly the Apple Car Play is a gimmick. You'll use the new iDrive a lot more

Yeah I didn't really like ACP myself and just use the idrive.

I’m enjoying running Waze full screen via ACP, but that’s about it. I’m undecided if I’ll subscribe to the feature after the free year.

Do you think that eventually BMW will make Spotify available via idrive?

BMW Apps is gone with the G20, apparently they will offer a native version some day.

Spotify was available on my MY16 F30's iDrive as an "app". Is this not the case on the G20? (Guess I'll find out in a few weeks when mine arrives, but I'd assume it's available).

It looks like I have amazon music as an app but I can't seem to get it to work. I'm just using my phone connected to Bluetooth. I can see album art and advance track or go back via Bluetooth.

I prefer iDrive over ACP because its cleaner, more integrated and easier access to Contacts, etc. . . . however when I switch back to iDrive then Siri Eyes Free stops working. The BMW Genius informed me that Siri Eyes Free will only work now when Carplay is active. When I asked if this was by design or a bug. . .he did not know! So, as of now, if you elect to use iDrive instead of Carplay connection then Siri Eyes Free is gone. Are they trying to force us to subscribe to Carplay?

About the only thing ACP offers me is access to text messages where Siri Eyes Free can also read and send text, email, voice mail and much more.

I just checked, you're mistaken; BMW APP is still available on iDrive 7 and G20.

Notice that this is App, not BMW Apps. App is what you see in that image, the group of generic apps from BMW (like weather). BMW Apps was the group of third-party apps like Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn Radio, Audible, Stitcher.

Can you see any of those third-party apps without CarPlay?

I have a '16 M2 with the older ID4+ unit, so I can't speak on CarPlay or care for it, based on my limited, unfavorable experience in a '18 320i loaner car.

However, I was just worried that I would lose the current "Rhapsody" widget, under BMW APPs, whenever I upgrade to the next generation of BMWs. That would make me sad..

Thanks for the clarification.

BMW in Europe implemented some third-party apps directly into iDrive (I have seen Pandora) without requiring an iPhone connected to the car. Like having an account for your car ordered thru ConnectedDrive. Not offered in the USA yet.

I suppose that eventually it will be offered in the USA as the "free" BMW Apps is gone -probably the reason of removing it as the subscription will be paid thru BMW.
