'20 M340i RWD CarBahn Stage 1 - remote start randomly started working again!
This is really weird. I've had the CarBahn Stage 1 on my 2020 M340i RWD for over a year now. Right after the flash, remote start stopped working; this is/was a known issue: car's lights would flash 3 times, but no start. Just a few minutes ago, I parked my car and started walking away from it, and just for the heck of it pressed the lock button 3 times....the remote start worked. No tweaks or visits to the dealership, no recent OTA, nothing. Any ideas?
Secondly, thought I'd just lump this here: I heard/read somewhere that the Stage 1 overrides the speed governor. Let's just say I have not found that to be accurate in over a year of running this flash. Anyone with this experience?

Absolutely love it. For someone like me who never tracks, the tune on this thing is one of the reasons I just don't need a full on M car. And to be fair, I think it's no slouch to begin with even stock, so it's a sweet bonus.

No idea. Website only has Stage 1 flash listed, but I don't really know their definition of "Stage 2"; some companies pair their flash offering(s) with other hardware upgrades (intake, exhaust, etc) and the combined package can sometimes be called a Stage 2, but I'm not sure with CarBahn.

I believe there's a thread about it, basically stage 2 is stage 1 but slightly tweaked to work with a downpipe I believe but only advertised as not street legal. And I believe stage 3 would be new turbos, similar package idea to the m3 or m5 ones they offer I guess.

Really strange. I’m the past it would at least try to start and obviously wouldn’t. Now, with either my primary or backup key, it won’t even register I’m trying to start it. Just ignores the command completely. I’m fucking confused now. 🙄 I was told Carbahn was trying to have a patch ready to go by end of August. We’re at end of September and no updates. Haven’t even received a reply to my email inquiry. Kinda fuckin annoyed.

With the Mission tune I just need to keep the NFC key card in the charging tray and then it works like normal. Hopefully they can do something similar with Carbahn.

Dinan made some release/notice that they solved the remote start issue earlier this year.
I do not know if they remove the speed limiter like you can do with BM3/MHD, etc. |

The speed limiter was definitely removed for Carbahn tunes.
As for the NFC card, I think I might just go the BM3 route. Problem is, trying to get the goddamn ECU back to stock before sending it back out for another bench load is ridiculously annoying. Tried with my dealer. The gave up after two tries and tried to tell me the DME was cooked. I know that isn't true. But they still charged me $300 for the honor. I want my remote start back! |

This is really bizarre then. A flash can't just "disappear" or "de-flash" back to stock on its own, can it? I know for a fact the car tops out at 130/131 mph; the fuel choke is obvious. And now with the remote start magically working on its own, I'm beginning to wonder what's going on. I think I need to take it in to the dealer to take a look at it....

Oh man; yes, 1 or 2 OTA updates since the flash was installed. I had no idea that could reset it!! Makes me wonder how long I've been running without it, haha. Going to take it back in soon...

So my issue in that respect is a bit different too. I don’t know what’s going on. My DME is like a Frankenstein. I deliberately allowed OTA updates since the dealer couldn’t figure out how to flash it to stock. The updates occurred, and the car is definitely detuned. But the speed limiter delete remains and the dealer still can’t (won’t try hard enough) to flash it back to stock via ISTA/P. Just a couple of weeks ago I ran it up to 145 without an issue and no speed limiting effects anywhere along the way. So I guess these can retain some of the tuning features even with OTA updates. I just wish I got my damn remote start back as well. Lol. I’m jealous if you. 😆🤘🏼

Confirmed....BMW's OTAs overwrote the flash. They now have to check to see if the DME is locked. I wish they had told me to turn off OTAs when I first got the tune! I had no idea an OTA could have this sort of effect.

Is the carbahn tune not that much more noticeable over stock then? Or do you not really get the chance to push the car much?

Not at all, the tune was significantly faster. Honestly, I think it's just me not noticing, plus the fact that the car's an impressive performer even in stock form, and with the MPE, my butt dyno noticed the lack of tune even less. It wasn't until I began realizing that the governor was still active and then how the remote start just randomly started working that I put 2 and 2 together and posted on here, and then reached out to the dealership. I think I've been driving without the tune for about 9 months now I'm a bit peeved that no one thought it important enough to mention to me to turn of all OTAs, advice which I would have followed without reservation.

I did. The re-flash is covered; unless the DME locked up after the OTA overwrite...

Does a downpipe void that warranty, cause apparently dinan checks for stuff like that before the tune is loaded.
Also, does going to the track or drag strip void it? Cause it says any aggressive track or competitive events will. |

Alrighty, final update for the sake of closing out this thread and capturing all the info here:
-BMW OTAs *will* overwrite the CarBahn tune. Depending on how much you drive, the way you drive, and how loud your car is (exhaust, etc.), you may not even notice this has occurred until much later, as was the case with me. The dealer told me that this is true for other similar tunes (I can't substantiate that personally, but ok). -BMW did charge a small labor fee for removing the DME, but the flash and loaner were all covered. Luckily, the OTA did not lock the DME and it was successfully re-flashed. -The dealer said that there was no way to disable automatic OTA updates at this time. I wasn't able to get a straight answer to the question, "So you're telling me I could have an OTA forced on me without me knowing and it may overwrite the flash again?".
