Garage List
I have a 2020 M340 , had several software updates. No change in pops or burbles. I will say I always drive in sport plus. Thinking of getting MPE this spring

New video of the M Performance Exhaust on the 440 which I'm assuming should sound exactly the same as the 340. Sounds OK in any videos out there but everyone seems to agree it sounds incredible in person.

There is almost no pops and burbles at all in the 2021. The 2020s that I drove almost had too many if thats possible,It was happening all the time. Sounded great though.

IF anything BMW should have done a comfort mode with no pops and burbles and sport mode made it sound like the 2020 sounded. They seem to never get it right w these types of things though.

I wish my car had some more noise, a little bit would be nice. Instead of almost none.

No way to do it until the aftermarket tunes come out.
I'm guessing when Mission releases their software, there will be an option to add burbles and pops with their tune.

It's not out yet though.

I drove a 2020 and 2022 Bmw M340i back to back. The 2022 was quiet, the salesperson kept turning down the radio so we could hear something.

About the pops & burbles if you open up the second exhaust by putting it in DSC or sport mode they are there but with only one tailpipe working it is a bit quite unless you have the sport exhaust option. In comfort mode only the LHS tailpipe is operational. It was the same with my 2015/16 M135i. There is a way to open the valve & disconnect the wiring to leave it open in comfort mode.

Just to comment on the control of the flap in the exhaust; My 2021 M440 has the engine sound menu available from factory. In the Sporty setting it opens the flap after a short (1/2 minute) warm up after a cold start. It does that also in Comfort and Adaptive modes and it remembers the setting.

The m340i requires coding to get that option, I did it with my car. Not sure why its not standard when it is for the m440i

So is the consensus on this exhaust-noise design fault (calling it a design fault because that's exactly what it is) that it's an exhaust issue or remap issue? My thoughts were initially that's it's because of the stupid OPF/PPF that's in the cars now which left little room for manoeuvre in terms of mods to improve it, but people here are suggesting that it's the map that's put on the car?

I can hear the cracks and pops trying to come out of the engine, but it's just super quiet - which is why I felt like it was more of an exhaust issue.

Since you're in the UK, unfortunately you have it worse than the US folks. In your case, much of the muting is due to the OPF, which the US market does not have.

However, regardless of US or UK, the 2021 and up cars have reduced pops/burbles which is due to a mapping change in the cars DME. This can only be changed by flashing the DME.

OK, is the DME the ECU? So a remap would fix it?

The OPF is just so annoying.

if not it's a 2020 so flash that thing

And you can set up to be nice and quiet in comfort - and louder and more pronounced in sport or sport+

I just wanted to mention that my M340i is 2021, and I had virtually no pops and burbles, compared to the 2020 model which I frankly think was a bit excessive.

Fast forward to having installed my AWE exhuast: I DO get burbles and a few pops, especially driving out over 4000 RPM in sport or sport + mode. Perhaps they were always there, but the OEM exhaust must have suppressed them. Because you can hear them with this new exhaust. They still aren't as dramatic as a 2020 model, but I'm happy with the level of these sounds now in my current car.

Am I the only one that doesn't mind not having the race boy pops and bangs? I mean I do have some but very minuscule. I also have the AWE Track Exhaust on my 2022 M340i

@b58bmbr Count me in, I have disabled the (subdued) noise via the speakers but I use the menu that gives me control over the flap and some burbles. (Is this menu specific to region or 4 series?)
I choose "Reduced" on longer trips and drive in Adaptive. This closes the flap (perhaps it opens at kick-down.)
Car: European M440i 2021 (with OPF).
