Pops and bangs possible fix?
I went to the BMW owners event in Thermal CA yesterday and was talking to one of the employees there. I was explaining the frustration of how quiet the 21 m340 is compared to the 20 and the software update that made the 20 quieter. The employee informed me that bmw was trying to make 1 software version that meets compliance for all countries rather than having different codes. This is why they muted the 21 and reduced the sound of 20 because some countries have regulations on sounds. Apparently he was extremely pissed off about this and sent an angry email to Germany about this. Don't quote me on this but he said that bmw will be coming out with a fix because they could face a class action lawsuit. He's not sure when but they plan to resolve the issue and bring back the loud pops in the 20 and make them way louder on the 21 which is great news. The locked ecu is of course still an issue as well but he didn't have anything to say about it. If they could revert and fix the pops and bangs, I know a lot of owners would be thrilled. Figured I'd share the info with those curious or frustrated. I think if we apply more pressure on bmw to fix these things we can see the improvements we want.

I really hope this is the case. They need an option for those who want the aggressive sound and those who don't.
Its not even just the pops too.. But also the aggressive upshift grunt when shifting at 3-4KRPM's Last edited by sikotic; 06-05-2021 at 10:04 PM.. |

I was thinking that they should face a class action lawsuit. Every year ever since the first batch got released the hp and burbles have been reduced. But I still don't think this will change anything for BMW, no company is going to admit they screwed up like this

I think it would be hard to go after them for reducing power, given that it's still underrated from the factory specs. The pops and burbles could be different tho, when I went for a test drive it was so loud and pronounced, not that I bought this car for burbles, but if it was a selling feature I don't know how they can remove it down the road.

I have a 2020, I think it was made Nov 2019 or something but I believe all the pre-hybrid versions were louder. An exhaust will definitely help, but the pops and burbles are tuning related. The best way to know if you can get them on a 2021, is to search for a straight piped one, if it doesn't pop with no cats or muffler then it's safe to say it can't.

You need an early 2020 model for full pops. Later production 2020s and MY21 cars have a different exhaust note. There is nothing that can be done as all those cars have the locked ECU. The only tunable cars already have the old exhaust characteristics

I've been avoiding my most recent update for a while now, but I have 800 miles till my next oil change and I'm scared bmw will push the update on me whether I want to or not. I have an early 2020 model (pre nov 2019) so I'm hoping there isn't much change if I do
