So apparently there's a recall for a number of bmw 40 models, related to the braking software. So I guess if my car is one of the effected models, does that mean I'm going to have to get the current update?

I had 03/2021.50 OTA updated a few weeks ago (EU MY2020). The start up exhaust burble and pops during drive were indeed significantly reduced also in my view.

A couple of weeks ago I got my BMW from service, updated to 03/2021.57 by the service shop. Pops and bangs are now largely back, maybe a bit "softer" but still very much audible.

My gf took hers in for that and we were worried it would remove the burbles and lessen the sound. We spoke with the SA when we got there to see and he said while he couldn't guarantee, he was fairly certain it wouldn't based on previous serviced cars!

Thankfully no change at all!

Did they update operating system software as well or were u already on the newest version?

Also, your girlfriend has an m340? Sounds like u found yourself a winner, congrats.

Not a great fan of pops and bangs but still miss my 2011 335, that was loud, got great comments everywhere I went.

They also updated the software to the latest and also had no changes on the burbles! She REQUIRED pops/burbles when she was shopping for her new car (coming from an F33)

I did indeed, she's a gem for sure

I guess I should go ahead and get it done, cause a faulting braking system problem isn't something to ignore lol.

Exactly my thought process. Got the recall notification, and considered not bringing it in as I was fairly diligent at avoiding the new software. But it was brakes, so ended up making the appointment. Got the car back with 7/2021.50, and significantly less pops. I have a Dinan exhaust, so at least I had tone, but way less pops. Does a gargle thing when rolling to a stop, which I guess is cool.

I was debating getting a downpipe, but that's been brought up on the short list now.

I have a 2019 production and was hoping for lessened exhaust note, but mine too was unchanged by the 2021.07 update during the brake recall

I'd highly recommend the AA catted dp, was very happy with the sound improvement but also quick surprised and pleased with the performance gains with just that.

I'd double check with the SA as well cause it sounds like some do lose it after the update :/. They told my gf they couldn't guarantee it, but out of those who they did service, no one reported less pops!

That's the exact one I'm looking to go with! Are you tuned? Definitely a tune will get the most potential from the downpipe, but curious as to any stock performance gains or is it just more noise.

I'm not tuned, to be honest I love how it feels now with just the dp and axleback. I was just getting it for the sound, but it actually made quite the difference with spool without a tune. Driving in comfort or adaptive it feels less leggy and more responsive, but in sport it really spools up nicely. I don't track my car, haven't even gotten to the strip once this year and don't have any safe places to open it up around me since their cracking down on "stunt driving", so its not really worth it for me to tune it since I barely get to use the full power as is.

That all sounds amazing! You've definitely sold me on it. I hear you on not being able to really utilize the car's potential though. Most I get to experience is when I take back roads and keep the radar detector on max sensitivity. I usually get to steal some moments between lights while doing the groceries, so honestly the downpipe is right up my alley for them lower spool times.

What's crazy about the update is my stereo was popping and the bass going in and out and the update fixed that. Didn't need a new amp after all . Also I thought I had a blown speaker . My left and right speakers had that flappy blown speaker sound. Nope it was the damn software!

Your lucky, they really hate radar detectors here otherwise I'd go that route.
