I've been watching car reviews of various models. Most recent savage geese on the G70 refresh. It seems like everyone says the same thing . You don't keep the M340i it's a lease and dump car because of reliability costs etc. How accurate is this statement?

I thought the B58/ZF is supposed to be reliable. Why does everyone keep worrying about reliability? What is it that makes people so scared of BMW these days? I haven't heard any major horror stories any different from other brands.

I do not agree with that opinion. 10-15 years ago, maybe but the last 2 BMW chassis have been very reliable.

case and point, we got a 2014 BMW 335 with 150k miles to use as a daily drive and small build.

This is my first Bmw and if Toyota is using the b58 in the Supra it had to go through Toyotas rigorous testing to be deemed reliable.

I financed and didn't lease so this car I'm planning to keep for 10+ years

I have owned an E36, E90, F30 and now a G20. Kept all of them 8 years or so. The E90 went through injectors like crazy. I put almost no money into the E36 and F30. I expect the G20 mechanically to be fine, certainly above average. The electronics might be a different matter. My E90 was the first year of a fuel injected twin turbo engine and they had all kinds of issues with fuel delivery, from high pressure fuel pumps to fuel injectors. If a problem is going to affect a large number of cars BMW will probably issue a warranty extension - happened with each car other than the E36. The engines on the G20 are not a first year design, and the transmission is rock solid.

Lexus/Acura fanboy, never trust anything they say. I will tell you so far my M340i has been more reliable than my former Lexus IS200T. 2 years plus in and it's still a great experience, and the best car I have yet to own. I have owned an E46 for a decade and was at almost 200k miles when I sold it.

Anyhow, I strongly believe G20 to be far more reliable than the E46 I had. These cars just feel sturdier and better built than the former ones. No matter how hard I drive this car, nothing breaks, unlike the Lexus. Toyota/Lexus maybe the benchmark for reliability, but the majority of their cars are super boring and soulless, so pick your poison. Life is too short to drive boring cars when you have more exciting options.

I agree . Lexus IS extremely boring to me. I do want to drive the IS500 because I love that engine .

Depends on what they mean by reliable, because from what I've heard your right about the b58 and zf being reliable.
I read before about mercedes being the most unreliable luxury brand, but they just rated it on how often things broke. They then noted how much more tech and gadgets mercedes used over the competition, so statistically it makes sense that more things will eventually break.
This is the second generation of the 340, using the b58, so they seem to have worked out alot of glitches and issues worked out. Keep in mind, the series has long been considered the benchmark in the category, so ppl like to try and take aim at it as much as possible in reviews.

All the advice I've gotten on keeping a BMW happy is that these cars are engineered to be driven. Like get the RPMs up, and let her sing. Unfortunate reality is that most consumers get their Bimmer for the logo, and don't drive it like it's meant to be driven. Alternatively, they get a BMW and hoon the crap out of it, then blame the car when it ultimately fails.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, enjoy your investment. The car has fun when you have fun too. Responsibly, of course.

It's quite funny to read the comments below a video comparison of the m340 and something like a stinger or genesis.

You mean the "bmw won't last 3 years until it breaks" bullshit from people who can't afford one or never owned one in their life? The "my cousins friends brother is a mechanic and he said …."

Yup lol, "my boss had three bmws and said their crap, he can afford a bmw but says the genesis is way better".
I also enjoy when they say how with these mods, this car can beat the 340 in a straight line. Had a guy tell me that his g70 did a 12.2 with just an intake and piggyback, but then I mentioned a stock m340 can beat that and never say another post.

I've driven nothing but BMWs as my main car for 17 years. I've never had so much as a light bulb fail, let alone a breakdown.
