Extended Warranty on m340i
Hello,
I will be picking up my 2021 m340i this weekend and I am finalizing the paper work with finance at the dealership. As expected the finance person started to talk on getting extended warranty and its pros (of course no cons ) bla bla... My current DD is a 2014 335i that I purchased new as well and did not get extended warranty on that. Other than regular maintenance I might have spent like $2k on repairs over its course of life after warranty coverage and it has 100k miles and runs fine...I typically hold on to car as much as possible for 9-10 years or so and so I do purchase them new. With m340i should I take that chance as well or am I better off getting extended warranty since I hold on to the car for long and given M performance parts on it not sure on repair costs down the lane? They are quoting me $4k bumper - bumper coverage with $0 deductible for 100k miles. I assume its the BMW Platinum plan but waiting to hear more on that from finance today. Appreciate any thoughts / experience on getting those warranty given I might have the car for at least 100k miles and more. Thanks! |

I’ve had the extended warranty on my last two cars going back 12 years and never not once used them for anything that was covered (powertrain, etc). I think modern cars are more reliable than we think. That being said I’m curious to what other posters think.

Since I am keeping my 2020 M340 for 4-5 years, I elected to get extended warranty.

The extended coverage seems expensive to me since it is only the part after 3 years that is useful. I think you will know in the first 3 years if you are going to have long term problems and I would trade it in. I also keep cars for 8-9 years and have had only one that put me on the Christmas card list for the dealer.

Yep, I've never purchased one. Some may have noticed that it's an ongoing joke about salesmen coming out of the woodwork and bothering you about getting an extended warranty because your factory warranty will expire. I don't know how the hell some of these people have my contact information but often times they're talking about cars I don't even own anymore. It's annoying AF.

It's more of peace of mind or maybe like an insurance policy. If you ended up needing >$4k of repairs then it was worth it. If you didn't end up needing it then was that $4k worth the peace of mind?
If you really want to get it, shop around. You can buy from any BMW dealer as long as you are still covered under your factory warranty. This also means you don't have to buy it right now. You can search for contacts at BMW dealers that can give you more information about pricing. |

There's a reason they try so hard to sell additional warranties.. and it's not because you need it.

Long time forum sponsor GOLFFRR is at a California dealer and offers BMW extended warranties to forum members at the lowest price points I have ever seen (I've had them quote me several times over the years and have always been shocked by their pricing vs my local dealer) - as I recall they can sell warranties to members out of state
While they of course do not have the advantage of rolling the warranty into your deal at your local dealer - you might find that their pricing is compelling enough to make the car and warranty purchase two separate transactions - hope this helps https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1670964 |

I got extended warranty for peace of mind - same reason I have insurance. I haven't had an insurance claim in the last 10 years; so going by some of the logic here should I cancel my insurance? I plan on keeping my car for 10 years or more so having extended warranty doesn't hurt. Got a decent deal at signing so why not? Funny enough they didn't try to sell me one I specifically asked for it.
Side note: if anything, get tire and wheel coverage (worth it in my opinion.) I declined every other coverage. |

I feel like dealers are jacking up pricing even more on ext warranties right now since they're trying to make money wherever they can with the lower inventory levels these days...I would just get a few quotes before your warranty expires.

B58 is said to be a much reliable engine vs the N55. Also you don't have to buy the warranty up front. There are a lot of thread here and in X5 regarding extended warranty. I will link it to you. You have to PM the OP at the end of your Manufacturer's warranty. He/she sells the BMW Warranty at a discounted price. I actually saved it as my favorite just in case. Since I own a 20 M340i and 21 X5 M50i. Specially the N63TU3 engine.

Its all about the cost. You have to negotiate it well down. Sometimes they can deny you. Which sucks. It is better to find a good trustworthy BMW independent mechanic. Which I have. Sans I did not buy the warranty. But might with the N63TU3

E.g. @100k ur car is worth say, $15k, and the total repair is $20k. Let's say there is no claim up to that point, the contract pays $15k max. If there is any prior claim, say, $5k, the payout will be reduced by that amount to $10k. Buyers beware. |

Extended Warranty on m340i
On a G20 I'd probably do it. Too many potential mechanical failures. I've had the car as a lease for 2 years and it's had a couple small issues, one being sunroof stopped working which was quoted as a 1100 dollar fix when I asked how much it would be if it was an out of warranty fix. Too many electronics on these cars, for the peace of mind I would but ofcourse that is up to you and your financial situation. We all know BMWs can get pricy to maintain.

Not sure who your auto insurance company is, but Geico offers something called "Mechanical Breakdown Insurance" which can be added to your policy at the time the car is new. I had it on a car and it covers everything for up to 100K miles and you can take your car to any dealer or shop for repair. The additional premium was about $25/month. If you say you keep your cars for up to 10 years, that would come to $3,000 additional over the life of the car, which is $1,000 (25%) less than you were quoted by BMW. Just another option to consider. If you don't have Geico, check with your current auto insurer to see if they offer it.

The finance manager is not your friend. In fact, he is generally the highest paid of the dealership staff because he gets a taste of everything he can sell you. I’m not saying that with today’s electronics an extended warranty is a bad thing… but, do your research and do not succumb to the up sales pressure.

As mentioned previously, if you're going to keep the car outside of the warranty period, get it. Even some of the Lexus fanboys who touts superior reliability buys the extended warranty because stuff breaks outside of warranty that can run thousands of dollars. I once owned a BMW for 10 years and although I believe these newer 3'er's maybe more reliable in some aspects, apart from the engine. These cars should cost even more in upkeep just by the sheer amount of tech as well as the Turbo and its components which do fail with time. My I-6 did almost 200k miles before I sold it with nothing failing in the engine. Don't expect that from a turbo engine.
Despite, the engine being intact, I spent thousands of dollars over the years just to keep it running. That experience is why I prefer to lease and have leased since I sold that car. These cars cost a whole lot to fix whether you're using independent repair facilities, the dealer or DIY. Furthermore, while the B58 is sublime, turbo's do go bad after some miles and require expensive repairs that weren't even an issue on the older NA I-6's.

If the BMW warranty is truly bumper to bumper (except normal wear and tear items) that would be at the top of the list for consideration especially if you can get it for less than $3k. |

Then I also got a I4 turbo(F30 328i) to 80k and 8.5 years for total out of pocket of $2k including tires, and that car had zero chargeable repair. That car also had BMW 15 years/150000 miles warranty that covers turbo and VCG and other expensive items. So I did save $7k on skipping 7 yrs/100k miles ESCs on those 2 cars. On the current G20 I4 turbo B46, it does not have the 15 years/150000 miles warranty, so it may be worth considering ESC, but 7 years/100k miles usually is trouble free anyway. Anything coverage beyond 7 years/100k miles would hit the aggregate cap easily as FMV by then is not that much. My 2 cents. |
