Cleaning

Anyone else as anal / sad as me that they remove wheels during a wash to clean the Brembo calipers?

And I still can't work out why this forum rotates pictures by 90 degrees....

Indeed they are. If you look on the back you will see the Brembo logo and also on the bleed-nipple dustcap.

Thought you had your car hanging up to dry - now that would be taking car washing to the next level!

Out of interest, what are you using to jack the car?

Is it obvious where the safe jacking points are?

I'm just using a trolley jack on the proper jacking points, using a jacking pad. You can get the pads of eBay for less than a fiver.

I've had to add a new level to my grading system for how mad people are when they clean their cars!

Ha! It's the only time I've ever done it but the spokes on the 18" M-Sport wheels are too close together to get at it and the brake dust covering the calipers was bugging me.

Is that the 790m wheels? I've bought a set to use for winters but they do look a bugger to keep clean.

I use Bilt Hamber wheel cleaner rinsed off with a pressure washer. It’s magic stuff, simply spray on, leave it to dwell for a couple of minutes, then wash off. Wheels and callipers are spotless.

Yes - actually pretty easy to keep clean but it's hard to get a brush through the spokes to attack the calipers.

Is that the "Auto Wheel" cleaner? I bought one earlier this year but not used yet. Do you need to agitate it at all and how long do you leave it on?

Will try mine next weekend. Issue is I have no driveway so only option is to use jet washes from petrol stations.

Yes, that is the stuff. You don’t need to agitate it, but I do with a brush just to ensure I’ve got the cleaner it into every nook and cranny.

I generally spray each wheel in turn and then return to the first wheel and spray it off with the pressure washer.

After drying the car, I give each wheel a wipe just in case I’ve missed any spots, more down to me missing any spots rather than the cleaner not doing the job.

Bilt Hamber Auto Wheel is the best non-acid wheel cleaner on the market - it's fantastic stuff.

I used it diluted 1:1 and even then it's absolutely cracking.

For general maintenance washes I use Garage Therapy Wheel Shampoo, which again has great cleaning power for a few weeks of brake dust and grime.

I used too years ago, had an E46 M3 with CSL alloys which were a pain to clean. Back then I didn't think twice about spending most of the weekend cleaning, polishing etc, now, just don't seem to have the time or the inclination if I'm honest. A mate of mine has my 110V Ported Cable polisher I used for detailing, think he's had it 10 years or so now so just shows how long it's been. Even now it still takes me best part of a couple of hrs to give it a clean but I'll be honest, the paintwork on the G20 seems to hold up very well to swirl marks so never felt the need to give it a once over with the polisher.
