On xdrive vs RWD, if it is your only car and you're in northern US or Canada I think it makes sense--otherwise no sense in AWD. I'd throw the RS3 into the mix to see what something smaller does for you--I really enjoy that car even with its haldex system.

The G70 is very interesting but I find it awkwardly styled in the front, although better looking than the new 3 series. Still, I am not a fan of NA V6's. Would rather have turbo 4 or an NA i6.
G70 doesn't have a NA V6, it has a twin turbo. Its the same 3.3 TT V6 found in the Kia Stinger.

You clearly haven't driven an RS3. The only thing good about the RS3 is the sound of the exhaust. Everything else is not that great: rides hard but handling and steering are very numb. Not a fun or comfortable car to drive at all. I would take a M2 over an RS3 in a heartbeat.
Agreed. I compared the M340, C43 and RS3 before I picked the M340. I was intrigued by the speed of the RS3, and thought that might compensate for the smaller size, ie make me forget that it's a smaller car than I really need. However, once I tried it I found it very quick but numb. I also realized that I was swapping from an M235 to potentially an M340 for a reason...I needed extra space, and the RS3 actually felt smaller than the M235.

Basically, if you don't need the size of an M340 (or C43), go for the M2C. Much better than the RS3.
If I decide I can live with only 2 doors, I've been highly considering the M240i. I'd love an M2 but this going to be my daily and idk about you but here in MN getting an AWD vehicle is a necessity in my opinion. The handling on the M240 seemed so much better than my F30.

I know somebody who left BMW for an RS3 and they say the love it. Lease rates on the RS3 are horrendous though.
True, the AWD vs RWD issue would be a factor in some states, although I've heard winter tires works wonders on RWD cars (but I've no personal experience of that as I didn't have space to store a second set of tires when I had the M235...which made for a few sketchy drives in January/Feb each year).

The M235 was a lot of fun, but I have to say that I am having as much fun in my new M340xdrive. Doesn't quite feel as nimble (although not as big a difference as I had feared before making the switch), but the extra power makes up for that!
How about the cabin space of the 2? Decent, cramped?? Good luck with the 340.

Space in the front was fine, but the rear is for small kids or adults you don't like! Trunk space is also much more limited than the G20. If you only ever transport 2 people and don't ever lug more than a couple of suitcases, the 2 will be great. Alternatively, you need another more practical car to go with it.

Thanks for the info. Just what I was looking for. Haven't totally dismissed the M2, options always good

Curious to know if you've ever driven a comp pack F80 M3? Might be what you are looking for...

Nope, haven't driven any form of F80, but I plan on doing so. I'm more interested in the F83, as I'm a sucker for convertibles, I know it will add weight in all the wrong areas, but driving a convertible, top down, shifting gears, revving the engine out, is just a great experience. I have driven an M2 Competition, and it currently reigns as one of the only modern BMW's I'd classify as an "Ultimate Driving Machine."

It seemed like he's already passed on it. Right now it looks to be between the m340i (after his first round of test drives), and the f80/82 or Giulia quadrifoglio (both contingent on test drives).

I went from 335iS to C43 to M4 so I totally understand him going to F8X over those 3. It's night and day but the C43 between the M340 and Alfa is a no brainer especially if you love spirited driving.
If you want a soulless car that just goes fast then M340 will be your choice. I just find it amazing that this C class platform completely wrecked the F30 and still giving the new G20 a run for its money.

It's like Mercedes and bmw switched places from who they were a decade ago. Can you imagine someone 10-15 years ago saying that they chose a bmw 3 series over a MB c-class due to better comfort as a daily driver?

100% agree. I would go for the C43, but I already have one Merc and I kind of want to switch it up, and still retain a manual (before it dies completely), so I'm thinking an M2/M4 may be the sweet spot. But yess, Mercs in their base trim, 300, retain their old stereotype, comfortable and quiet, but the AMG 43, and especially 53 trims are great vehicles. Mercedes has been learning some tricks from BMW. And the 53 engines, is one of the smartest/best engines I've tested.

Its funny cause I follow the very controversial Jason Cammisa on instagram (loves old BMWs, hates the new ones) and he does mini reviews there. His verdict for the CLS and E53 was "When did Mercedes learn to shit all over BMW?"

My 2016 340i X-Drive lease is up in September and test driving: M340i x-Drive, C43, G70 3.3 T AWD, S4 Prestige/ Black Optics:

Love the C43...however--hate the shifter on the steering column!! Its where the windshield wiper should be!! Also, for the refresh they should have at least made the infotainment screen a touch screen! It is in the G70 at 15K less. The refresh--great on the exterior...did not nearly go far enough on the interior given the A220.

G70...I'm sorry but to me the interior...with no digital instrument cluster...seemed already outdated. Also, the materials...leather on the seats...not sure how they will hold up. Seemed less robust than the Germans. Exhaust sound...non existent. Good steering. But the trunk is too small just 10 cubic feet. I lug a college kid back and forth...his laundry alone would not fit.

S4...my car before my 340i X Drive was a B8 S4. A great car!! DSG, supercharged engine that sounded great. Great curb appeal...the car was imposing yet civilized. The new S4 is a Huge step back. I thought I was driving an A4. It also looked like an A4. In fact the A4 now has more badging. The A4 sline at least has an S line badge on the front fenders. The S4 has been stripped of its V6 T badges and is now just blank...no V6 T, no Supercharge, no Turbo badge (like C43).

M340i. This just does it right. Its an improvement over my current 340i...unlike the step back Audi took from B8 to B9. Better engine, exhaust, and cabin materials than the G70 (but the G70 is a bargain...so you should expect that). The real competitor is the C43. That is a great car. If the darn shifter were ot on the steering column and the re-fresh had done more with the cabin tech...C43.That would be the winner...they did not.

So M340i X Drive.

I'm surprised you found the column shifter to be a deal-breaker for you. I honestly find it intuitive to use (same operation as any other shifter), frees up center console space, and overall easy to adapt to, especially since column mounted shifters are nothing new in cars... but to each their own, congrats on your next purchase, have fun!

It does feel like they switched places and it's absolutely heart breaking.
But hopefully the new M4 will be enough for me to come back

Apple car play is $80/year after the one year trial. Not $80/month.
Otherwise, great review. Thanks for sharing

Thanks! Didn't notice the mistake, just fixed it - still a bit absurd though to have to pay for a feature, which in my case has barely worked, and is also free on a >$20k Civic.

Thanks! Didn't notice the mistake, just fixed it - still a bit absurd though to have to pay for a feature, which in my case has barely worked, and is also free on a >$20k Civic.
You're absolutely correct. Welcome to BMW, lol

Oh damn you're right. That is.. somewhat of a sad power output considering then. Wonder if they are holding out on us.

Fascinating. It must be a better carplay than the one in my dodge.

The cls53 is the one with the hybrid technology right? I actually find that car genuinely interesting. If im thinking of the right model it's an electric + 6 cylinder ICE hybrid designed for optimum performance and powerband.

Yes, the 53 series AMG cars are fitted with the turbocharged 3L Inline 6, paired to an electric supercharger, and 48 volt mild hybrid system. It makes stop and go at stop lights seamless, and no longer a need to turn off auto stop start every time you start the car, and it fills in perfectly for turbo lag, so there's nice thrust of power mixed with the silky smoothness of an inline 6.

I don't think this engine will have good longevity though due to the numerous parts and electronics, but thats what leasing is for.

I would love to see them put this in a C class, there's a possibility the next full fledge AMG C Class will go from a V8 to an I6, but we'll see. I recommend you drive a CLS/E53, even without intention of buying, the engine is just that good and very interesting. I can't wait to see how BMW implements mild hybrids into their vehicles.

I would hope no modern day built car would start to fall apart before 10K miles. Check back when you hit 40K to see if it has held up by then.
