Just got back from the dealership, the service manager stated that "this is normal, these engines burn about a quart every 1000 miles."

Given that these are advertised to be serviced every 12mo / 10k miles for an oil change, this information is quite concerning as you would have cars coming in with no oil with months of starvation.

1 quart per 1000mi is acceptable on engines that have 100k+ on them but not on a brand new platform that is out of the break-in period.

I will be calling BMW NA to voice my concerns regarding this. While I love the car, I cannot (time wise) afford to be taking this in every 1000-2000 miles.

That manager is full of it. I would take the car to another dealership. That is certainly not normal, they'll tell you anything so they don't have to diagnose your issue. I have experienced that scenario before at a Lexus dealership and went to another place because i knew the issue I had was legitimate. Second place ended up swapping out spark plugs and injectors which fixed the issue I had with the car going into limp mode. Not all dealers are created equal, some have very poor customer service so the consumer must be willing to find another dealership who will take his/her concerns seriously.

Please call BMW NA and request field engineer to inspect your car as well as approve additional diagnostics. Once these are approved, the dealer will find the the problem.

Again, this oil consumption is excessive and not normal at all. If the head gasket turns out to be OK, the next likely culprit is the turbo.

Also thinking it could be a piston ring issue as there is no signs of oil in the bay at all, but yeah I will continue to follow up with them as I do not want to enter Lemon Law territory.

Proof Lexus reliability is overrated.

My car said low oil right after an oil change done by the dealer. Obviously they did not put enough oil in. One of those situations where the car left the dealership in a worse condition then when it went in. Good thing I keep all the service records. Some of my service records say 2.0 turbo is the engine though I have the B58 so maybe that's why.

My oil low warning just popped on as well, but at 4300 miles. Seems early...

LMFAO at 1 qt per 1000 miles. So that's how they do 10k mi oil changes. You've already cycled out 10 qts by the time you're due for a change. That guy is horseshit. I would tolerate 1 qt every 5000 miles but any more than that and I'm raising concerns.

Which dealer are you going through for Service here in ATX?

I purchased and have serviced with South, but after all this I will probably start using the North dealer.

Went through north Austin on McNeil for my last one and will probably schedule with them for this one as well. Nothing but positive things to say as far as service. Sales is another story.

Has nothing to do with a manufacturer and everything to do with a specific engine. Volvo has had their oil consumption issues. Honda too. Lexus, yes, has had it as well.

That said, take it in - seems a bit excessive.

Taking mine into a different dealership than previously serviced at for the OBD reprogram recall as well as the camera recall next Wednesday, I have mentioned the oil consumption issue to them as well as BMW NA, and they will look into this while they have the car.

I will update with my results when I get the car back.

For those that didn't see the other thread:

Mine ended up not actually being low, but my oil sensor was bad. Now waiting three weeks for replacement to part. Do not just add oil! Bring it in! Could be a bad sensor like mine...

Thanks everyone for the insight on the oil and that this is not normal. I took the car in for service couple days ago to get the recalls done and I also mentioned the oil consumption rate being rather high.

It's been about 1.5k miles since I last did a top off and I went in for service. BMW found 6.8 quarts of oil out of 7 when they drained the vehicle.

They would like for me to return after another 2K miles to have this measured and inspected again. I will update here when I reach there!

Well it finally happened to me today while out driving, warning message popped up to add quart of oil. I am just over 3200 miles, sucks because I now have to find time to schedule an appointment for this. With my annual vacation coming up in a week I won't get to do this until after Thanksgiving. Hopefully the oil level sensor is the culprit.

It's not the oil level sensor, that's just a dealer rolling the dice at an issue they can't address.

I had a bad oil level sensor before; the oil reading was incomplete not registering as it should, this particular issue is a correct reading but excessive usage of oil.

This vehicle's motor just naturally burns oil rapidly and based on the feedback here, it's a pretty common occurrence.
