New Alpina B7 7 series

BMW will produce 200 limited edition Alpina B7 7 series cars. 4.4L supercharged V8 500hp and 516 lb-ft. 21" Alpina wheels and zero to sixty in 4.8 sec. The car looks good from the release I saw from BMW.

BMW ALPINA B7: BMW and ALPINA, Germany's Renowned Performance Specialists, Create a New High Performance 7 Series Model
02/16/2006

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - February 16, 2006... Committed to developing the best performing vehicles in the luxury market, BMW with ALPINA has created a special high performance version of BMW’s 7 Series luxury sedan. The 2006 BMW ALPINA B7 brings together the luxury, pioneering design, and advanced technology of the 7 Series Sedan with the scintillating performance of a supercharged, 500hp V-8 engine.
To power the BMW ALPINA B7, ALPINA specially developed a higher-performance version of BMW’s 4.4-liter, 90-degree V-8 engine and mated it to a 6-speed automatic transmission featuring steering wheel mounted shift controls. The motor produces 500 horsepower at 5,500 rpm along with maximum torque of 516 lbs.-ft. at 4,250 rpm, and propels the B7 from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.8 seconds. ALPINA 21-inch wheels carry Z-rated performance tires, while the sport-tuned suspension includes Active Roll Stabilization. The B7 aerokit includes a rear spoiler to improve stability, handling, and performance at high speeds.

ALPINA was established in 1964 as an official and approved “ennobler” of BMW automobiles. Their tradition is to take production BMWs and make them even more appealing to connoisseurs of automotive finery.

With this new model, BMW will raise the benchmark for the segment in terms of performance, refinement, technology, and luxury. Approximately 200 US-version cars are planned for the 2006 model year, with a release date in July 2006.

Ahh, you know what...put me down for one as well. Let's see 200 in production, and we already have four confirmed orders here. BMW better get on their horse and make some more. The demand is just intense

Since you work at an MB dealer but lurk on a BMW board, I will say this:

BMW/Alpina > MB/AMG

Just kidding...but not the ">" part.

All a matter of opinion. Going by the current sales trends for MB I know most consumers like the BMW brand better.

Reading my mind... ...scary.

MB can throw all the freakin' HP they want at their sh!ty product... as long as they continue their primary build philosophy, they will never drive or perform like a BMW. Every rag I've read has described MB/AMG perfectly... they're like an old school muscle car with ultra nice amenities. Far, far from true a BMW competitor.

Just so my opinion is clear... AMG builds amazing power plants. I just don't get the whole "throwing pearls to the swine" part of this execution.

Alpina doesn't have their version of the X5. But the 4.8L V8 in the current X5 4.8iS is developed by Alpina.

Alpina sure is building quite the reputation for themselves.

I still would love to know the reasons behind BMW preventing the M guys from sinking their teeth into the E65.

It is simply because the platform of E65 is too big and too heavy to be transform into a proper sports car. And the idea of M7 doesn't really fit in with M's philosophy.

that's why BMW never had a M7. And that's also why BMW of North American need to go through the trouble and get the Alpina to compete with S55 AMG.

M Rule #1: Must be a manual

I know BMW broke this rule with the previous M3, and they paid for it. The folks that run the M division said... "Never again!"
