PHEV’s are “Wolfs in Sheep’s clothing”
Interesting article suggesting that our Plug-In Hybrids are anything but Green

PHEV does allow you (the possibility) to start your journey cleanly, bypass some cities cleanly and arrive cleanly - whilst using petrol inbetween and re-charging en-route away from urban areas.

I must be different then. Since taking delivery of my 330e I haven't had an MPG lower than mid 50. My purchases of fuel are quite significantly lower than my previous 320i.
My emissions have to have dropped significantly. When commuting to the office generally I use electric and charge at home. 90% of the time I use electric in city centres and then switch manually to sport when on the open road. It works a treat, it really does. Whilst I could complain all day about the software, the Alexa, the Office 365 being taken away and now Online Entertainment going and of course the fact that BMW tell you nothing and leave you in the dark , the car itself is outstanding. Oh and yes 8% BIK what's not to like? |

It's not really saying anything that we don't already know. I mean, I bought into PHEV in 2017 because was the cheapest way to buy into a blend of solid performance yet efficiency in my market. It's fairly evident how uneconomical it is if not charging frequently. I charged daily at home as I installed a charger. The new 330e has a greater range and it's proving a lot more efficient for me. But, when I want Xtraboot it's there... And then some! All up tho, I feel by and large better in a PHEV than diesel.

It all depends how they’re used, doesn't it? I hardly spend anything on fuel nowadays as the majority of my commute is done on electric and I plug in every day.
Where they fall down is when not used as designed. I know a few people who have 330e/530e’s as company cars and have fuel cards, so they have no reason to plug in and use their own electricity. They're just saving due to BIK. It’s hardly surprising then that this is the case when there are hundreds of PHEVs out there that are not being plugged in, burning fuel to propel and to charge.

I test drive a 320d and a 330e the latter was somehow much more engaging to drive. Given I’m a company car driver the lower BIK made it quite an easy decision but if they were the same I’d still go either the 330e.
Now I’m likely to be wfh 4 days a week I’ll be able to plug it in every day so hopefully that will keep fuel costs down for my personal mileage. |
