Is it possible to show the gear indicator on the HUD?

I have been playing around with manual shift and have been frustrated so far not knowing what gear I'm in unless I look at the instrument cluster. Does anyone know of a way to configure the HUD to make it show gear position? I almost feel like the HUD isn't living up to its potential in some instances, such as this.

Maybe something they will reserve for the M3

I am not aware of a way to make the current gear appear in the HUD. I had a C6 Corvette with a HUD in which the current gear appeared, it is very useful. Maybe in a future OTA software update?

Normally I would not care so much, but I feel like the transmission runs so smooth and almost feels insulated from the rest of the car. It's hard to determine sometimes what gear I'm in and whether or not I should downshift. I'll probably adapt.

Does it matter what gear you're in with automatic?

Is there a rev counter? It seems like that's really the only thing you need if you're selecting your gears manually. It doesn't really matter which specific gear you're in.

You don't even need that - if you have ears

Doesn't it make a difference when you activate the sport display in the HUD? If you activate this, you see when to switch gear, not sure if you see the current gear also.

M cars has that. So you should be able to code it I think.

I have it also in my G20. You can choose to only see this when activating Sport mode or always.

The rev counter is not very clear... the problem is downshifting and staying in the power. As you slow down, it's not clear if and when you should downshift. It's probably just something I need to adapt to. In my old Lexus IS350, you just tap the downshift repeatedly until it won't let you downshift anymore and that means you're in the optimal gear to get back on the throttle.

It may be you're just not used to the car. I think having an accurate rev counter is more important so if it's not very good, that does suck. But as you drive it more I bet you'll get used to when you have to shift. The problem with automatics is that you probably drive it in auto mode more often so you don't get the opportunity to get accustomed to selecting gears.

If you hold the downshift paddle, it will go to the lowest gear possible.

I had an F80 M3, and prior to it, a F30 335i. If it recall, they had different modules for the KOMBI and HUD. There was no way to code it in on that platform. I'm doubtful we will be able to — but I would love to be wrong.

Also (at least in the case for my '16 340i) if you're in sport plus and in manual mode you can floor the accelerator and hit the kickdown button and the car will stay in the same gear until you downshift, then it drops to the lowest gear and you take off like a rocket.

Going from 7th to 3rd instantly while fully floored is insane.

I'll have to test that when I get through the break-in period.
