Road debris took out my transmission

This afternoon has been nightmare. 6 and a half hours into a 7 hour road trip home a giant hunk of metal (some kind of tie down) flew off the semi in front of me and under my car. Couldn't avoid driving over it.

A few seconds later smoke starts pouring out the back and I get a drivetrain malfunction warning. I quickly pull over and transmission is completely inoperable. I'm 40 miles from my house on the side of I-80 in the middle of nowhere.
Called bmw Roadside assist. They start arranging for a tow truck and A Lyft. I got the wife and kids in the car with me.

3 hours and A half dozen calls later a truck finally comes to get us. The rub, the car won't come out of park.

Eventually we got it on the truck.

So I'm pretty sure the hunk of metal cracked the tranny fluid pan causing it all to leak out in short order. 1400 miles on the odometer.

This is second time this has happened to a bmw of mine. Why they insist on making the damn fluid pan out of cheap plastic is beyond me.

The cherry of the top? One of the kids was battling diarrhea. Good times good times.

I hope your day was better than mine.

Truly sorry to hear, that sucks man. I had no idea about the plastic oil-pan on these cars.

Well if you would have had a Tesla that doesn’t have a transmission...

Too soon?

In all seriousness, at least you didn’t get in an accident and nobody was hurt. I’m sure it is frustrating.

Man.. Sorry to read this. Family is safe, and that's what matters. I always try to think about the positive — as that piece of metal could have went into your window and hurt someone.

Side note — If you HAD broken a window, they are on backorder to the US. I've been trying to get a replacement from BMW since mid-June. :-(

Hope you're made whole soon.

On the upside maybe I'll get the new software update while it's in the shop. 😄

I have to laugh otherwise I'd go insane.

Glad you and your fam are okay, and that really sucks, but at least it’s repairable (hopefully)

Got a call from the dealer. The damage is much more extensive than I originally thought. Damage the underside structure where the engine mounts are, transmission pan and fluid, the cat and exhaust also need replacing. Parts and labor for just the underside is already at $6800.

The lower front bumper was also damaged so they have to replace the front bumper cover. another $2k at least. So all in looking like at least $9k in damage.

Not surprised. I had my F30 front end damaged by another driver, and it looked pretty minimal. Was almost 7K out the door. Thank gosh for insurance!

Hope it's not off the road too long.

That should be insurance.

Also reason for cams recording during driving.

Debating how most efficiently cover the holes. Has anyone found bumper plugs in Portimao Blue?

Should I buy white one and some Portimao touchup from the dealer and paint them?

Europlate?

Brightside.

No license plate holes.

Tell repair shop specifically not to drill.

Every time I needed BMW roadside assitance, their response time has been horrible no matter what the emergency has been.

I know they contract with local services but why the 3 hr wait? If you call AAA directly they show up in 20 mins with a flat bed.

Lower reimbursement rate.

Higher rates/bigger clients serviced first.
