Lexus has had the option of a key card that can stay in your wallet for at least a few years, I test drove an RCF roughly 2 years ago that had this card.

Are we sure this cant stay in your pocket? If you have to pull it out of your pocket each time, its useless!

Umm this is the equivalent of those annoying hotel key cards that you have to quadruple check that you have it when leaving the room so you don't get locked out, and then keep up with it in a convenient but secure place while you're gone.

Just a supplement!

The key card is actually just a supplement for those who use the app to unlock and start the car with their smartphone (or maybe also -watch, not sure about that).

The card is meant so you can use valet service, or give it to your dealer for service at the dealership, whilst going full keyless via the app on your smartphone (and possibly watch).

How did I know this thread would IMMEDIATELY turn into "that's so USELESS, BMW is STUPID!!!"

The reason this exists is for people with smartphones whose manufacturers or providers don't allow NFC. Like Verizon Droids, or all iPhones. If and when Verizon allows Droids to use NFC and Apple decides to let you use NFC for anything other than Apple Pay, you won't need this. Until then, it's just a convenience thing.

This card would fit perfect inside of a iphone case.

I'd like to have one just to have a backup key in my wallet that is on me at all times. Otherwise, I don't see the point.

I wonder how well the NFC would work with the card in a wallet? It would be awesome if it didn't need to be kept separate in the pocket.

That's how I look at it. I'm not so focused on this being a useless feature. I never thought of it as being a daily routine kind of thing.
Back in the old days, I always had a hide-a-key or a spare key in my wallet because I have been caught out a couple of times when I, or whoever I was riding with lost their key. Now with the electronic key fobs, there isn't an easy way to have a backup plan if you lose it. This is perfect for that. Even more so if you plan on using a smartphone as your key. Too many things can happen to a smartphone... lost, stolen, dropped and broken, dead battery, app quits working for whatever reason and needs to be deleted and re-installed, etc. etc. etc.
If it's meant to be an everyday tool, then yes, there doesn't seem to be much point to it, but if it's meant to be a back-up plan, I think it's great.

Well the problem is that my car keys have my home and mail keys attached to it, so it gets bulky sitting in my pocket and I always take the keys out of my pocket and stick it in the center armrest.

But still...I'm still gonna have to carry my house keys regardless. This magic key doesn't change that.

It's not about advancement. It's about having less to carry in your pocket. I do hate having to carry three things (wallet + phone + key) in my pocket.

I don't usually comment on stuff like this but this has got to be a joke. As others have mentioned, Benz & Lexus has been doing this for a while now. I don't even think Benz does it any more. I had a client back in the early 2000s with a 2003 and a 2005 SL55. It came with this thin card that you could keep in your pocket at all times to both enter the vehicle and to start the vehicle. It worked just like the keyfob did. Didn't have to be pulled out of your pocket or placed in a specific place.

This is literally 90s technology if you have to tap it on the door handle to open the car!

More like an inconvenient thing though. Its less convenient then the regular key.

Well that's pretty lame isn't it? What's the point if you can't keep it in your wallet or pocket?

Verizon doesn't control anything on Android phones, except maybe some cheap low end phones they co-brand.

Also, Apple exposed the NFC API to 3rd parties in iOS 12.

This is/was a feature offered on some lexus models. I think the key is more practical.

They need to split the difference and make it so the card can stay in wallet and function the same as current key to make this viable imo. But that has some technological hurdles that comes with it
Good call. That would be a step ahead.
