Some say using a soft top is for cost cutting, but many higher end verts use them (Bentley Continental GT, S class coupe, DB11) so that argument seems invalid to me. I (like many, many others) have been critical of BMW lately, but this is a move I applaud.

They seriously need to fire their marketing department and burn all these hackneyed, idiotic "image" videos. I guess the average BMW customer doesn't give a shit about driving and are all-in on the image. This problem is becoming really pervasive for this manufacturer and it's enough to make me want to considerably distance myself from the brand. It's no longer about driving for BMW it seems.

Not me - I ordered an F82 M4 once the first renders of the G80/G82 were out last year.

To be honest I do like the G23. Very nice configuration. Yes, from some angles it looks a bit like an Audi A5, but that’s not a bad thing. Also the soft top can be seen as an improvement. Wind insulation and strenght of the modern fabrics afe probably equal to a hard top. Beside this it saves a lot of weight, complexity and you gain boot space as well.

I don’t think that’s a conclusion you can draw. The ultra high end coupes have basically zero volume relative to the 3/4 series convertibles. Aston in particular can’t afford to do their own engines or infotainment, so they definitely can’t afford to engineer a hardtop. Also, none of those cars have the same kind of expectation of everyday usage that you might expect from a 4 series, so while there may be romance associated with the fabric roof, it’s also not an investment that anyone wants to make today. BMW benefited from having a design language on coupes that had thin c-pillars which makes the roof stack easier to package.

When the E93 hardtop was introduced, it was the best implementation of a three piece retractable roof and was it was BMW just at their best relative to the competition- lots of examples where the E9x cars really set the standard at the time. The fact that the roof unit was basically carried over unchanged to the F33 seems to indicate that BMW wasn’t keen to spend the money to redevelop the roof. Retractable hardtops have great visibility, look good, and add meaningful rigidity when closed. They are heavy and take up more space than a softtop but I think the E93 in particular handled the visual mass well with the trunk cutline and notchback roofline that evoked the New Series.

The other high volume four seat convertible- the Porsche 911, actually has a fabric covered retractable hardtop, with the only “soft” elements being the pillars, because the curving 911 roofline would have been hard to package with a fully rigid design.

Are you saying BMW should've developed a hard top for the regular 4er (430i/M440i) and a soft top for the M4?
I can get behind that. But of course they won't spend the time or money to develop both. And don't tell me it's not possible. The old SLs came with both a soft top and hard top for winter use.

So we've seen them all... I can honestly say not a single variant of the 4 is appealing to me whatsoever in the slightest. Good job Bmw! You nailed it🥴

One variant left, the Gran Coupe. That one is a big deal too considering the previous 4GC was one of the best looking models in the lineup.

The Emerald green M3 and M4 with gold ✨ rims is the only hulk green version that looked of anything decent. Have fun on the resale market in a couple of years. To each his own, but NOT the right choice BMW! Brand heritage and race lineage matters. Offer green that's fine, but don't overhyped it that is a huge mistake.

There's only a couple cars that look good in green ✅ and that's jaguar, range rover, old willy jeeps.
I have to agree that BMW is overly embracing green. I have to believe that the majority of people do not like green cars (if nothing else the red tails clash with green). I admit the green on the M looks nice (if you are a rare green car person), but I dont think its a good play to make both the M and non-M have green launch cars in one generation. Would it be a sin to use a silver or black?

Prefer something like Irish or Python green instead of all these Metallic greens BMW is offering.

But I do love me some green.

Gorgeous, beautiful design, a stunner ?

None of the above it's grim best taken out at night with the lights off.

Would be embarrassed to even let a friend park that on my drive. Would say could you park round the corner !

+1. However the sick part is when adjusted for inflation it's about the same price as the 225hp E46 330 Convertible back in 2000.

Green, historically, has been one of the hardest colors to sell.

The new grille style has grown on me a lot, yes even the new G80/G82! I also like these new greens that BMW is bringing out across the range and combined with the Oyster interior and that matt wood effect, to my eyes this looks pretty classy (disclaimer - I do wear glasses ). I'd like to see pics of that green combined with Cognac leather interior too.

I know its each to their own and all that, but just thought I'd throw in a positive opinion for a change!

On and one last thing - going back to soft top is a 'good thing', for the various reasons that others have posted, but also you'll get a bit more boot/trunk space too
Soft top is the best

Looks good! I think I actually prefer it over the coupe, just because when the top is down it's a clean beautiful design.

I prefer my hardtop convertible M4, and the new M4 ragtop will feel like a step down, but overall it's not a deal-breaker for me.
