Driving on AC on or off?
Hi guys,
Today as the weather get cold around 3 degree celsius or 37 fahrenheit i was start to wondering if I should stop the AC, as most of you see on theyr g20 is that the car recommends to have AC on non-stop. However i was wondering does it really do anything in winter and isnt it better to just leave it on normal heating? My other question is does anyone knows if the car stop the AC when u floor it on sport plus, my idea here is does the car get faster if you stop the AC. Regards, Niko |

I don't have a G20 yet but on my G05 I usually keep the AC turned on all year long and have read many others do also. As far as I know, the compressor will not come on unless it is needed so having it switched on does no harm.
I don't know what effect it may have on the speed on the car. |

Agree. Plus Climate Control will disable the AC automatically, when it is below the low temperature working threshold. As to engine performance, the load from the AC will be minimal at low temperatures. We run variable output compressors, so power consumption will be small with low demand. It is hot days when AC saps the power... when we need high output for cooling. |

Run it as it stops mold from building up in your hvac system; It stops the car from smelling like a moldy shoe.

F30 and even a 2007 S60 both disengaged AC on full throttle, so I'm kinda certain that G20 does that too.
So no need to manually turn AC off to make tha car a tiny bit faster. |

Only time I turn the AC off is when using Launch Control. Old habits die hard. My first car was a NA 1.3l petrol hatchback. The AC off button in that car was like a turbocharger button.

I know some people turn off their A/C to save money on fuel, but to me it seems pointless having a function on your car that you don't use to its full potential. Well done, you saved a few Pence/Cents. You've also not used a perfectly good feature of your car. It's false economy. It also makes less sense in the summer when they put their windows down to keep cool, thus increasing fuel consumption and negating any saving in having the A/C off.
I wonder if these people also turn their lights off and on in the house at night every time they blink. |

Agree with all above comments -- it's a good dehumidifier.
The only time I turn it off is on the track

I tend to keep the A/C off unless I need to use it which is not often

I turn off when I'm feeling a bit allergic because the air is too dry.

I think it's better to always leave it on to regulate the air, its humidity, and so on. I do the same. But if you are planning a long trip and you need a good car speed, you can turn it off. I assume that the a/c is primarily aimed at cooling the air, and its heating is an additional function. If you do not drive very often, then leave the air conditioner. In other cases, it is probably better to use a stove. In general, I'm confused myself. The best advice can be given to you by the aircon service. My father usually has no problems after the winter season, but he always uses the stove and air conditioning seasonally.

A/C off, air on. I don't need to run A/C all the time only cut it on when needed.

Always off unless I need AC. For those who keep it on all time, I don't want to start an argument but the whole HVAC system along with condensator starts smelling like crap once the car is couple of years old.
When I get into folks cars who run them all the time, there is always that smell along with initial moisture which none of my cars ever do or smell like under very same conditions. I will stick to what I know has been working for me for past 30 years.

My current 5-series has been run with AC on all the time, for 9-years. No smells, or moisture build up in the system. |

Air conditioning makes the air in the car much more favorable and comfortable for the body. So I advise you to leave it on. We don't think at all about the quality of the air we breathe. That is the most global problem that everyone faces today. It is essential to understand that the air is getting worse and worse every day because of the vast number of different emissions from factories and plants. The only thing that can somehow save our lungs is quality hvac systems. I'm looking forward to getting rid of internal combustion engines and switching entirely to electric cars. At least that will save us somehow.

I had my E90 for 10+ years, only turned on the AC when needed; never experienced any smell whatsoever. Don't quite understand the argument of leaving the AC on at all times. I use mine as needed. I wind down and get natural air every now and then.
