G21 M-sport 19" - front tyre wear!

My g21 is just over 2yrs old, 24k miles, and the front tyres have plenty of life left on the tread. The issue is the outer shoulders with excessive wear...is this the usual story of RFT tyres? Anyone else experienced this, and maybe changed to non-RFT?

If it is both shoulders, typically low tyre pressure is the cause.

We need to remember RFTs are slower to warm, even worse in wet weather. The setting pressure may need to be higher, particularly for shorter trips (if that is our regular driving) where tyres may not get to working pressure for many miles of our driving.

BTW, how do I know? Been there, experimented through experience.

Thanks for this, and with experience of several other BMWs on runflats I typically run them pretty high already i.e. in the 'ECO' range, that's 2.9bar (42psi), so they're most definitely not under inflated. Seems to be just the outer shoulder...

If not doing so already, tyre pressures should also be set when cold.

If doing them after a reasonable drive, the pressure will drop as the tyres cool, especially at this time of year.

If it’s just the outer shoulder then you need an alignment.

I'm reading the OP has outer wear on both front tires, from the description in the first post.

Anyone around BMW through the years will know that outer front and inner rear wear can be 'normal', even with correct OE geometry calibrations. Harder you drive the more it is evident. RFTs can make it happen faster, due to the stiffer sidewalls. Hence why keeping pressures at optimum settings can minimise the shoulder wear, without changing alignment calibrations.

Except it’s a G21. In England. Hard to drive them hard there. And he makes no mention of uneven rear tire wear. And he has owned multiple BMWs and still finds this tire wear odd. Rather than reaching for an unlikely innocent explanation, the obvious potential alignment issue would seem more prudent and reasonable. Op should get it done while there is still a chance to save the tires

Definitely check alignment if there is shoulder wear. My comment in addition to your post was, "Or you drive hard in the bends and get added scuffing".

I hope the OP has checked the rear tires, many get caught out with inner wear, before they know it.

BTW, many UK users get excessive shoulder wear simply using lots of roundabouts.

Thanks. I live in Scotland, mixed driving, not too many roundabouts and would say i'm pretty easy on the tyres. Rears have very even wear on both sides, they're both pretty much done now though at 25k miles.

With RFTs (particularly), wear on the shoulders can be a sign of under inflation. Do you have yours at the recommended pressure?

Yes - and as mentioned it's only the outside shoulders...if anything I'm now right at the upper end of front pressures i.e. 3bar

Definitely not the case for RFTs. Due to a large piece of metal through one of my rears I have just removed the Turanza T005 RFTs from my M340d and whilst the rears were worn down in the middle (apparently common with these) the fronts were evenly worn with 4-4.5mm left..... too good to just throw away. If yours are wearing on just the outside and its not driving style (high speed cornering or aggressive on tight turns) or tyre pressures then its most like a tracking issue....i.e. too much toe in.

haha indeed! I'm more than happy with that on the rears, but seems a waste to ditch the fronts at the same time with lots of tread left and bare shoulders

I have about 34k miles on my 2021 M340i and the Pirelli P7 run-flats are still within wear specs. (Caveat - two rears have been replaced due to a nail and a side-wall bulge). I may look at replacement before any long summer drives, but it’s not an immediate priority.

I run them at recommended pressures (39/42 psi IIRC), and have done quite a bit of long distance driving. Not sure how the driving style affects the wear.

FYI - I think the ride sucks on rough local roads with the Pirelli P7s, so I will definitely try something different when I replace them.
