B48 Engine Burning Oil

Hello,

I have a 2020 420i (G22) with the B48 Engine. The car asked me to add 1 litre of oil today as it was at minimum. The last oil change was done approx. 15000 miles ago, at 10000 miles. The car has done 25k miles. I am a bit miffed as i have had bmw petrol engines before which have never used any. Is this normal? As the car is relatively low mileage and has been driven sensibly, is there anything else i could check as i hope it is not piston rings or valve seals at this early stage. There are no visible leaks. The only other thing i have noticed is at idle, the car seems to randomly shudder or shake at times. No EML on though....

Thanks.

You haven't changed your oil for 15k miles and you are wondering why you are low on oil? You should consider oil changes at much more frequent intervals if you want your engine to last. I would suggest at least annually or 7,500 miles max if using a good synthetic oil.

Modern engines lower the pressure of the piston rings in the name of efficiency. But this also makes them burn oil over time. I would not worrry abour a liter over 15.000 miles.

He has said “liter” so I am going to guess he is in Europe. Official oil changes in Europe are every 30k kms (18641 miles). While I do a change between the official ones 99% of people here follow the official schedule with no issues.

Thank you, Gorthol. I would not want to own a car whose engine oil has been changed at 30k mile intervals. For many years now BMW maintenance intervals have been to lower its costs during the included 3 years of free maintenance in the US and get you past the warranty period. Continue doing your intermediate maintenance and good luck to all Europeans that buy their cars and rely on those "recommended" maintenance intervals. Viva España!

30k kms, not miles. Yeah I also think it’s too much, however on a local forum we have G20 users with 200k miles and this interval without mechanical problems (the diesels seem to typically break the rubber part of the engine chain gear damper at 150k miles but that’s unrelated since the damper itself doesn’t touch the oil). However better safe than sorry because I sometimes drive the car hard.
