Ok latest update, been in the body shop since the beginning of May got a call that they found additional damage. We are now up to $29k and change in repairs. Allegedly will be done the end of the month

Wow!! I don’t say this often, but that is one car I would not want back.

Is $29k close to 70% threshold to total the car?

For a '22 M440, no, even if it is a base model with no options.

Why? There is no structural damage as per photos. Just cosmetics and plug-n-play parts.

My x2 ended up being around 10k when I crashed it. If it's a good shop you'll never know. I didn't have any airbag deployment, everything was front end but the car felt like it did prior to the accident and it looked perfect.

There’s no structural damage visible in the photos. I’m fairly familiar with the amount of impact force required to trigger all of those airbags and the estimate increased to $29k because additional damage was discovered. Trust me, there is structural damage that just isn’t visible in the posted photos.

Agreed. Good luck selling down the road. I'd take the bath on it now & cut my losses.

Where is the turn and what did she hit? Looks like a straight piece of road with nearly no obstacles.

Ok here is the latest on the repairs after 6 months I got the car back about two weeks ago. Total repairs were at $40,395. Not including the $7,700 of rental car. Drove the car for a week then realized all the following. Biggest issue is they forgot to tighten my drivers seatbelt, left the rear seatbelts. I discovered this and got in to drive back to the body shop when I lost all steering. It seems the steering rack was bent in the accident but never replaced. USAA requested an explanation in writing from the body shop a week and a half ago and they have yet to respond. I am Thai king by the time all the below is correct the repair bill will be well over $50,000.

Problem is now there is no way I can drive my family in that car. If the body shop made those mistakes I found who know what else is wrong.

No pre repair inspection was done with me.
No post repair inspection was done with me.

Some items on this list the body shop had no way of knowing if it was existing damage. (Except no pre inspection was done with me and they called me with updates at least twice a week for six months and never asked about any of it. ) Therefore I can only assume they did a poor inspection at best

Wrong dash was ordered tan instead of black Added 2-4 weeks to repair

Quote shows non HUD windshield was ordered

wrong overhead console ( I had to go to dealer to get them a part number)

Scratch on dash trim

Broken vent installed on new dash

Scratch on gear shifter

Broken trim around gear shifter

Scratches and burn marks on a pillar

Rattle noise in headliner

Alignment off (steering wheel crooked)

Radio issues no Sirius XM (stated they knew there was an issue but new it was too expensive at $3,600 so they didn’t want to replace)

Paint on center console

Stain on drivers door from airbag

Steering wheel damaged

Engine trim scratched

Driver door trim chewed up

Drivers door scratched

Hood gap to fenders off

Hood gap to bumper off

Headlight gap off

Wheel damaged

Rear seat belts not installed properly. ( left under seat cushion)

Front seatbelt not tightened (bolt literally was only holding on by one thread

Steering rack bent on accident side

Oooof, sucks about the car but any accident you can walk away from is a good thing. Glad your daughter is safe with minimum injuries. That G22 saved her.

I don’t understand why you were so optimistic about the repair of this car. As I said initially and as I rarely say, this is a car I would not want back and would not have wanted repaired. You would have been much wiser to push to have the car declared a total loss rather than being repaired. Unfortunately, now you are in a position where that is no longer an option and you are stuck with a car that is basically worthless and unusable. It will be almost impossible for you to find a buyer for the car now. I’m sorry to hear you’ve ended up in this predicament.

Having said all this I’m also baffled the insurance company didn’t cut their losses and just total the car. What a shame.

Believe me I wanted nothing more than to have this car totaled. The insurance wasn't having it. They set the threshold to total it at $48k and stated they wouldn’t consider it a total loss unless the repair estimate went over that. Talked to the insurance today and the body shop is eating the cost for my rental the last few weeks and for the list of repairs above. Car is being given back to me tomorrow or Monday.

I agree the car is essential worthless after this. But, gotta make the best of it and just keep it till I can move into another car.

Okay. I was remembering the following post and got the impression you actually preferred to keep the car. I have to say the insurance company just made an insane decision. You should do research on “diminished value” and file an additional claim for that. It will probably not be a particularly easy road to go down, but that car absolutely has significant diminished value after the accident and the extensive repairs.

W can only claim diminished value if we weren’t at fault for the accident which we were.

Ok so the saga continues. Got the car back Monday. Drove it for the first time today out of the neighborhood and got all kinds of issues. All safety features disabled and rear diff lock disabled. Hard to steer at slow speeds like there is no power steering.

Wow. At $50k you would think you are at fair market value for a 2022. Sorry to hear it’s USAA. They are supposed to be among the best. But, your repair place is subpar?

How is your daughter doing?

At the very least, your car did the job to keep her safe.

Yeah we went to the USAA certified body shop and it has just been one issue after another. She is doing just fine everything is healed up and she did tell me that the accident definitely makes her a better driver. Now that she realizes how quick things can happen.

They can still total it out even after the repairs. Make it clear you will not accept car unless it is perfect and that it will never be there.

I had a similar issue on a 328. Was repaired and got hit like 2 days after I picked it up. The 2nd hit showed issues from the first repair. I told them I was taking it to a BMW shop and if it was determined they put me back in an unsafe car was was going to sue them.

I would highly suggest talking with USAA and telling them that some other shop needs to inspect the car and complete repairs at this point. And if issues are found there will be other discussions about their DRP and they along with the shop will be helped accountable and in the spotlight. It they can total it and everyone moves on.
