SUV not needed for where I go. On road, the 340 is a blast.
That's great, sounds like the 340i will do great for most of my driving then... Unfortunately I plan to get the ZTK package, so maybe not

It was a real eye opener for me, a lot more fun to drive on the road than the 540i, it really handles and drives well for an SUV. I did think about a M340i, but the X3 gives the occasional off-road/rough road ability when needed, more space inside, its quick and that commanding view of the road in front.
The M40i is the first car I have driven for a long time that I look forward to driving as often as I can.
I've driven the M40i a couple of times and really like it. I've also driven the 330i, but not the 340i, so that's the only one I need to test. All the reasons you state are the reasons I want to go for the M40, but I don't know if they're good enough reasons for me considering how little I take advantage of them even in my Forester right now.

So I've taken my M340xi through some dirt roads. Like 10 miles of gravel/ dirt road. It did fine but I drove slow as hell to avoid any scrapping and touching. The car felt really firm and unhappy but it managed.

I also drove through some ice/snow on the highway once and that wasn't as much of an issue. (Will depends heavily on your tire selection)

I would say get the M340xi and take friends car when you go camping.
