What was cool about the GC is that it was the Coupe with two small doors cut in it. Simple concept.

Now they're trying to make it into something it isn't. This car was great because of its sleek looks. Now its turned into something more like an AMC Pacer. Blech. Have to see in person before making the final call, but I'm not feeling it.
Agreed. Will wait to see it in person before final judgement, but not thrilled with the direction they went with this.

I'm glad I'm not the only one torn on this… the pictures make it seem so tall and "unsleek" or whatever the word is. I feel like lowering the roofline like an inch or two would completely change the profile for the better.

Also is anyone concerned about the base price basically 60k before options? That's so close to m3 levels, which IMO is a much more special car no matter how many m badges they add to the GC

This thread is about the regular G26 gran coupe, not the i4.

The above shown bumper is the standard (non M-Sport) bumper of the gran coupe, but you can't order that one on the i4. The i4 has a different standard bumper (while the M-Sport bumpers are very similar between the i4 and the GC).

Understood. Might have to buy the part and get it painted/fitted. Hopefully all the sensors lineup.

Fugly. It's like this is part of some secret BMW agenda to force its customers to shift to buying SUVs

I wasn't saying new cars are slow by any means. It just seemed odd in the horsepower wartime we live in today, the base models seemed to have been forgotten about. Purely on a numbers-only basis.
I think HP is related to displacement, and in the quest for mpg, 2.0L is the de facto choice with less HP than, say, 3.0L.

However 0-60 is augmented by turbo, e.g. latest B46 2.0L turbo can hit 5.4 seconds, while also provides 40-42mpg in not-so-eco driving.

So for one, I do not think 250+HP is that bad.
Hmmm point(s) taken, touchè

…and there hasn't been ANY reasoning for this, none that i've read or spotted in the press lately.

I can't imagine they think they could just add this to M-sport cars quietly and without explanation.

Somethings up. Maybe upgraded even more crazy M-mirrors for the g80 LCI's/G87 reveal??

It's not for M-Sport cars, it's for the M-Performance models, i.e. the ones officially attributed to the M GmbH bottom line AFAIK.

I think they are just differentiating the M-Performance models some more from the regular M-Sport models, carbon roof is also an M-Performance option nowadays.

Probably also an indication that the G87 kidneys/front will look distinct from the M240i front similar to the G20/G80 divide; that way the M240i gets some more M goodies but will not be confused for an M2 by people who know a bit about them.

By the way, Markus Flasch acknowledged the M side mirrors in his i4 M40 walkaround Instagram video, saying they are the same carbon M caps as on the M3/M4 (without giving a rationale, but see above for my rationale at least).

Do we know why BMW went back to the flattened door handles? Seems like a step backwards.

Aero I'd expect, but how much this saves goodness knows. Marginal gains and all that.

That would make the car less comfortable, hospitable, and useful, and definitely will not happen, if at all, until the H26!

Please define "SUV"....
  • Selectable 4 wheel drive versus full time AWD?
  • Locking differentials?
  • Solid axles?
  • Body-on-frame architecture?
  • Off road ground clearance?

This is nothing but a unibody car with a taller roofline than some would prefer. Nothing about this car remotely qualifies as an "SUV", also true of many others falsely wearing that moniker (e.g. Chevy Trax? )

Not more practical. GC appears to have more rear seat legroom and has a lift gate. Those are deal-breakers against the sedan.

I found these photos in the i4 forum. I'm assuming the body of the gran coupe and i4 are identical. It looks really good in these photos...

Sure but less head room in the back due to the sloped roof

Possibly, but we don't know the cushion height or how the Oscar was placed in interior package development. Some of the complaints here have been the apparently taller roof than F generation, so may be quite sufficient. We will have to see. Meanwhile, liftgate versus trunk is the major benefit. I won't buy another vehicle with a trunk ever again.

Based on the specifications posted on these boards, the GC doesn't appear to have any larger seating dimensions over the 3 this time around.
Also, isn't the base price now higher for a 3 Series as well?
