Ok it’s way.

Just a note for all - there are NO new features for idrive 8.0 cars in 11/2023 at all, only big fixes and support for new hardware variants.

Haha yeah makes sense. Thought it'd be something like that. I've never seen it any higher than about 22 miles I think so I was baffled to see it even show that figure on the battery. Looked so weird.

My favourite parts was it tell me it was 22C outside instead of the 4.5C it really was lol

Well that’s disappointing, so our cars are basically EOL for future upgrades. Super

It’s plausible some smaller tweaks will happen in 03/2024 and 07/2024 releases. It seems that the development team were focused this release cycle on sorting out issues with the new platform.
But yes, don’t expect any life changing new things. Was kind of hoping they would back port the heating shortcuts from 8.5 ( I could care less about the new Home Screen) , but alas doesn’t seem to be happening.
At least the stability of 8 is rock solid for
Me these days, from where it was in 2022 night and day

There’s going to be a second LCI next year, so perhaps all the effort is going there.

Yes, the mild LCI in July will bring idrive 8.5 via the newer MGU22 head unit.

It should also get the interior changed from the 4 series LCI ( read: flat bottom steering wheel )

I wonder why they are going for 8.5 and not 9? Perhaps 9 needs a different car architecture.

9 ditches the iDrive controller hence they only seem to be doing that on the front wheel drive platform cars, I guess not to annoy long term BMW owners of 3/5/7 series etc?

Just got this update too. Was hoping we would get the Anti Theft Recorder feature at some point that went into other cars recently but alas no!

Be nice to get a push notification if the car alarm goes off.

You can request features be added to the app. In the help/about page there's a form to complete. Bit hit and miss, but at least one suggestion I made appeared in the app. (not necessarily related admittedly).

I guess if the hardware in the cars is capable, they'll consider it if enough people ask.

I have already suggested push notification if alarm goes off, and if tailgate, door or window is left open for an unusual amount if time as occasionally I open the boot when key is in pocket. But maybe needs a bit more demand to be taken forward.

8.5 actually has more features than 9 (it's a little confusing).

They are the same interface, but the underlying platform is different:

8.5 is still on intel chips, on bmw's linux distro.
9.0 uses new ARM hardware, and is based off of android automotive. but, as mentioned, doesnt support the idrive controller.

the numbers are the way around they are because the android automotive is the new standard platform for all new models, including the idrive X in the neu klasse cars

So yesterday I visited the second BMW service centre in Glasgow (both Arnold Clark) to be told again that they cannot update my software which is still sitting at 11/2019.39.

Now maybe I'm being really stupid but can somebody clarify that if you can get Apple Carplay then the software should be able to be upgraded to include Android Auto?

They asked if there was anything wrong with the current software, which there isn't but just feel it's maybe missing some key improvements and for one minute I don't believe there has been no update for 4 years.

So where do I go from here?

I can't help thinking that for some strange reason it's they will not rather than they cannot.

Anyway, perhaps you might get more sense out of an independent. These guys say they can update software https://www.glasgowbmwminispecialists.co.uk/

I live 5 minutes drive away from this place, have pinged them an email, if they don't respond I'll pop in some day next week.

Cheers for this.

Well that's handy! Let us know how you get on with them, if it goes well, I may try them myself.
