My first 9 months with the 2020 M340i
When I bought the M340i, the dealer assured me that all the issues I had with my 2007 335i were a thing of the past, that the engine in the M340i was so good, Toyota was using it in the Supra, and so on.
But after just a few months of driving, the exterior driver's side mirror stopped folding in and could not be adjusted, nor would it defrost either. So they replaced the whole shebang. Then when it finally started raining here in SoCal, the passenger's side headlight has lots of water build up in it. This was a laser headlight that had to be replaced, I note that just the headlight itself is $3,000 not including the labor to replace it. So after the first 9 months, the car has racked up around $5,000 in warranty work. But other than these troubling issues, I love the car. Sure hope it doesn't eff me when the warranty runs out. |

My m340i is the one I'm keeping 5 years... I mean iconic engine , probably one of the last gen gasoline only cars! So yeah I've kept my cars maybe an average of 3.5 years the last 5 times. I hope this one last 5 years without any major issues though, my last BMW was totally fine for almost 4.5 |

My 9 months has been (almost) event free
Traded in a 6-series MSport for a loaded M340 Xdrive, last June.
Having owned numerous prior BMWs, (3,5,6,7 Series)not to mention Maseratis, Saab Aeros, Hondas, Acura's, etc. I can honestly say this is my best car to date. Other than the dealer I purchased it from, I have absolutely no regrets. Great daily driver and quick or quicker than an M3 when needed. As importantly, the brakes are as quick as the engine. The iDrive 7.0 and wireless CarPlay tech is head and shoulders above the rest. I STRONGLY recommend the wheel/tire/cooling upgrade that gives you 19" Michelin Pilot Sports non RFT's, and the adaptive suspension. Two questions for other M340 owners: 1) Did your cars come with the rear lip spoiler and front fender M badges (left and Right) installed? Mine did not. After arguing with me that my car didn't come with that spoiler (wrong, ALL M340's do, and mine was loaded with options!), the dealer took 7 months to order and install it. They still need to properly fix the slight scratches on the trunk lid. 2) Does you blinker have the automatic cancelling feature (brief tap to cancel) that came standard on my 2008 535 M Sport? Mine doesn't, and it annoys me that a 2020 $70K car with laser headlights didn't include this as standard gear. Same is true for full power seats and steering column adjustment. I'm probably being too picky, but I'm interested in your thoughts. |

As far as full power seats I assume you mean the thigh support which is manual? I think others in this class also don't have power thigh support. The one thing that did surprise me was the steering column adjustment. I think most other cars in this segment do come with power adjustable steering. It cheapens it a bit but I suppose it doesn't bother me much since my wife likes to stay away from my M340i (she says it's too low, too uncomfortable, and too fast ) So no need to adjust it after the first time I adjusted it to my liking.

It was a chintzy move on BMWs part. All of the vehicles in this category (and certainly price range) have it motozized. The lack of truly full-power seating is also a cop-out.

I still think my biggest regret with this car will have not been ordering it with the adaptive suspension. Too late now

I likewise had big regrets in the early stages of the ownership, but these days I actually have started to like not having the option of changing the suspension options. It drove me nuts at times having the option because I could never decide which setting I want the car to be on and it was a constant switching between the configuration. I think I already play with the settings of casual/sport individual/sport+ option too much and adding another variable would make me even more indecisive, haha. This is just my personal experience, but I think I enjoy the drive more with less configurable options now. |

I believe it's this way because it's a sports sedan and if you are needing to change steering wheel position in a hurry for aggressive driving, it's faster. Just a guess...

Are you saying people change the steering wheel position while they're driving?

Early lifetime trouble are a poor indicator for the aging reliability of the car, my e39 is 18 years old now and was never more reliable than the last 4 years. So don't feel bad about this kind of stuff, shit happens. |

Anyway, to the op, it's probably a good idea to set aside some quick cash for repairs and maintenance if you plan to keep the car long after the warranty expires. This is true for any luxury brand, or any car for that matter, not just your particular car. |

No, I would hope not. I'm saying they may be at a light or at the track and want to do a minor adjustment based on previous lap. Hey I don't know what I am talking about. I have owned 7 series for the last 14 years and just figured with the driving style of 3 series owners are more aggressive. I would prefer the electronic option also but with the G20 now,I will take this tradeoff with all the other options available now.
