Agreed, always looks stable and planted.

The prototype looks so planted!

Whats up with the blinking brake lights? I have seen this more and more on new cars, did this become a requirement lately? Its even seems to be on this M3

Pretty standard in Europe to have brake lights flash when braking hard. I imagine that most testing videos from the Ring fall into this category

The eyes register blinking lights better than static lights, so from a safety perspective it is a good thing.

That's correct. And it isn't actually that hard - certainly before the ABS would be triggered on a reasonable surface.

LED lights appear to “blink” on video but you wouldn’t see that with your own eyes. It’s an illusion.

its not an illusion. Its PWM (pulse width modulation) that LEDs use.

they flicker really fast so your eye only sees the average brightness, but cameras will take a frame depending on the frequency the camera is recording at vs the frequency of the pwm.

I think some cameras can correct for this, but it happens with LED bulbs / led backlit TVs too

No it's not. I even have this programmed/coded on my M4. When I brake hard enough, the rear lights will pulse and then become static. I've seen this tech play out in real time, and many fire trucks and buses use this pulse technology too.

The G80 hasn't been released yet. All we've seen are photos and video of camouflaged cars. Why do you think that it can't at least match the quadrifoglio for driving dynamics.

Solid info

I always wondered how static LEDs where able to rapidly flash, even with a strait-voltage resistor attached to them. This gives me the gist of its MO.

Now back to the regular scheduled flair-grille bashing..

I guess with the blinking brake lights I meant, I see this more and more now a days on brand new econobox cars. I was wondering if this was a new mandate that all new cars had to have this. It really bothers me while driving.

Yup, I coded this into my M2 since we have this function disabled in the US for some reason... I'm starting to see a blinking 3rd brake light on some newer KIAs though!

Because its BMW in the late 2010's. I'm sure the steering complaints will exist, ride comfort issues, etc will still persist when the car comes out. The G80 won't likely be too revolutionary of a change driving wise, its not like it will be the return of the E-chassis generation. Alfa is simply on a completely different level. If it weren't for the sh*t reliability and lack of dealers I'd take one.

Alfa at this point is looking at the niche of bmw, think bmw appeal to a wider audience these days...

The one positive thing about the massive grills is it should help with track days and the transmission not over heating. At least that was happening at BMW Performance center at Thermal.

I'm just hoping I will end up liking the look, because so far everything else looks good. Arctic Race Blue, brown interior, AWD, and 6-speed might keep me an M3 customer.

I don't need AWD but it would be nice for more grip during autocross. As long as it isn't dramatically too much heavier and has the option to turn off for some drifting

Amen to that. I thought about trading my M3 for a hot minute, then realized I was looking at an $80k car at the used car side of a Jeep dealer. The staff matched the scene and I haven't looked back. Glad I got that vibe and now have the Gt4 instead.

I coded the same feature on my M4 also. But I'm wondering why on the G80 the brake lights looks more like amber than red or it's just the
video footage rendering

Oh you can certainly program the effect to be visible to the naked eye, but I don’t think that’s what’s going on here.

Look at videos of LED headlights. You’ll see them flicker, and that’s not a feature. It has to do with the FPS of the video relative to the LED flicker rate. It’s a modern version of when spinning wagon wheels would seem to freeze or spin slowly in old westerns. Maybe that’s before your time.

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...bj1m_WgUFW-DOo

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...jjtVzCAwKySYeN

Automotive LEDs are going to be DC and not AC as in the first video, but automotive LEDs aren’t continuously lit as they employ pulse-width modulation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-width_modulation), so you end up with a similar effect.
