Thumbs up Uniden R8 Review: The Supercharged R8 is the New King of Radar Detectors

Amazing! Uniden not only raised and set the bar for radar detector range... They have now shattered it! Destroying any and all competition.
If I drove more than a handful of miles monthly, I'd definitely invest the money to have this, the absolute best Detector on earth.

We have had some truly mind-blowing multi-mile detections with the R8. In one encounter the R8 out alerted the Redline 360c by 50 seconds at a steady 85 mph, that’s more than a mile advantage.

Interestingly, the degree of improvement of the R8 versus the 360c was the equivalent to what we have observed with the Redline 360c over the performance of the R7, but now the performance has tipped back to Uniden’s advantage.

In another mind-blowing radar encounter, we picked up a 34.7 Ka detection that lasted nearly 10 minutes at a cruising speed of 80mph, that’s more than 70,000 feet or 13 miles.]

I got R3 and love it, I can only imagine how good Uniden R8 is, probably overkill... BUT I wish it had a built-in dashcam similar to Escort Maxcam 360.

I'm all for improvements and while impressive, I think a 13 mile detection is in the realm of too much advance notice. Anything beyond 2 miles ahead is a little unnecessary unless you're cruising at 150MPH+, which you really shouldn't be doing on public roads anyways.

Been running an R7 for the past ~2 years and really love it.

I'm not sure I like how the mute/mark buttons are now on the front of the R8, as I rarely use these and IMHO looks less clean. I suppose if you use them a lot then it's a nice change.

I will probably try this out once they become available.

I have a R3 and use Mute/Lock Out function all of the time.
have you not encountered shit loads of K Band alerts from newer vehicles with Adaptive Cruise Control? I have. I prefer this feature to be easy to reach and activate like on the front of my R3.

In my twenties, my radar detector was a must. Now, I don't even get a second glance while shamelessly neglecting posted speed limits. Hell, some of the local police even wave at me. I had one recently, who I thought was going to pull me over; just happened to be going to the same place I was and then talked to me in the parking lot about how much he liked my car.

Age and nice car I guess.

Yep, my V1 G2 already alerts me too far away on Ka band. I slow down for cops that are on adjacent highways sometimes.

The filtering on the R7 is just stupid good. I haven't marked anything and it just stays silent unless there's really something to worry about.

I drive in South Denver, so plenty of things around that used to set off my G1 V1.

This is really important. I’m using a V1G2 which is a huge leap over the V1 in terms of quiet, but it could still be better. I’d rather have better discrimination (especially on K band) than more range. Companion apps help but there’s only so much that they can do to quiet down a chatty RD.

Using an R7 in mine and I love it. It's saved me quite a few times. The combination of this and Waze is about as good as it gets.

I don't see the need for arrows, or a need for more distance than my R3 provides.

Looks like it is a beast though!!

Same here. Point is not to get a ticket and spend $ on fines and insurance. With an R7 or R8 I'd need to get a couple of tickets in a year. R3 is best bang for the buck.

Once you've had arrows you can never go back.

I have the R7 and it also has saved me countless times. The only time you have to be careful is when cops use laser or instant-on technique. Fortunately LEO's in my area don't really use laser (although I have encountered it once or twice), but I do occasionally see them using instant-on. The R7 + Waze has kept me ticket free for a while now.

And I wouldn't go back to a radar that didn't' have arrows. Makes it very convenient when trying to locate the signal.

Sounds like the consensus is to find a nicely used R3.

I can certainly condone this sentiment.

I have heard the praises of "arrows" for yeasts and years when Valentine was the only Detector with them. I borrowed a friend's for a couple of weeks while he was traveling to see if I should invest in one at the time. It was effective and the arrows were intriguing. But my habits had taught me to simply slow down no matter what until the threat was no more. Thus I never bought into arrows.
Keep in mind, I've been driving since 1988 since High School.
I think I got my first Detector in the early 90s, a BEL or Escort.
I upgraded every 2 years after that. I stuck with BEL or Escort because they worked and saved me countless of tickets! And I tend to be "brand loyal".
Ever since I've owned my current R3 and updated the firmware a handful of times, it has worked FLAWLESSLY! It never let's me down. And I've tweaked it so that falsing is non existent. Do I want a R7 and now R8? Sure. Is it a priority purchase? Nope. Only because:
A. My R3 works so damn good.
B. I drive so little.

I'm actually interested in their R4 as well. It too has crazy long distance range.

Safe motoring to all.

more info the better. if you did a 140 pull and the cop is quite a ways behind you can ditch him easily. if he's ahead of you just take the nearest exit or slow down before you crest the hill

So in Virginia, where detectors are illegal, it's pointless to use one. If you are a Virginia resident, the police just confiscate your equipment after they pull you over. If you get hit with instant-on and slow down, the police pull you over anyway and give you a ticket and take your equipment. My V1 has sat unused for some past 20 years...

love those things, for years when coming back from snowmobiling up North we used to use our radar gun to have fun with all those folks. They would pass us doing 80-90, we'd hit the gun watch their brake lights come on, slow down then after awhile speed up only for us to zap 'em again !!

I've seen a few used R3's locally...is there anything to watch out for? Old/bad firmware, common failure points like the power port or inability to find a signal, etc? I've been using the same relic of a.radar detector since graduating in '93 but I ALWAYS use Waze just to be sure.

on rdforum.org there have been reports of displays or powering-up issues on both new and aged units. As there were when the V1Gen2 first came out.
And you'll need a USB-C to Mini-B charge cable to do firmware updates.

Think the Uniden R's are considered good and reliable.

I have wanted to buy a new radar detector for many years, but never have because...

1. The constant beeps from something that isn't radar.
2. The constantly changing tech (instant-on/laser/etc).
3. They're so damn big/ugly/wires/etc.

Back in the day there were remote mount versions, which was fantastic, no cords and big hulking things hanging under the mirror. I haven't researched enough to figure out if there is anything like this anymore.

If I were to get one though, I usually buy the last version, so maybe an R7?
