Shame it can't help the woeful DAB signal.

Anyway, now got a phone with wireless charging and thought that I'd see how it did while using Android Auto. Started on 44% and 1hr40 later I was at 51% with a warmish phone. Certainly not hot. Seems to be useful, albeit slow, when not using Android Auto.

The wireless charger is really there to stop AA/CarPlay draining your battery, then actually charging it to 💯 when you are on the move.

I just have a spare usb-c to lightning cable in the armrest should I ever need to properly charger ( the usb-c port is higher amperage so charges faster )

Yup, so do I. Well the last phone didn't have wireless charging. One thing that I am curious about is that when I plug the phone in the USB-C armrest port, I get "USB device not supported" or words to that effect. Is that normal?

Nope, it shouldn't do that at all.

Are you in the latest iOS ?

On first connection something should pop up on your phone saying "trust this device"

Yes, that *is* normal.

It depends what mode your phone is in on USB connection - could be MTP (media Xfer), PTP (photo Xfer), mass storage etc. You will likely want to select MTP as otherwise your phone is probably defaulting to a protocol that's unsupported by the car (hence the error message).
