Wireless charger present but not working?

Hi all,

Have just picked up my UK 2022 M340i this afternoon. I was expecting the wireless charger to be deleted although on collection both myself and the dealer were surprised that the wireless charging tray was present, although nothing happens when I place my phone in it.

To confirm this isn't just the NFC tray (I have comfort access included and this works perfectly) as there is an LED and the charging logo on the pad. Can anyone shed any light? Is it just a dummy tray or could a future software update enable it to start working as a charging pad?

Many thanks

Stupid question but your phone definitely supports wireless charging?

Yes it's an iPhone 12 Pro, sorry should've mentioned that in the original post!

Well, unless it's been disabled in the idrive menus (ISTR seeing an option to turn it off) then it sounds like a fault.

My understanding is not all NFC trays are also phone chargers. There is a specific tray dedicated to this. The ones with the phone charger also include a charging status light.
You can use the NFC to enable your key card, that is it.

This was my understanding too but this tray has an LED to indicate charging, I will try to get a photo later on today

They probably had enough moulds to keep that trim peice the same in these cars, but the physical charger underneath ( the magnetic coil ) is probably missing.

I'll check mine next week when I get it as it was produced not long after yours

Have you turned your phone on and off? My 11 pro wouldn't work with the wireless charger until I re started it

I think that's probably what has happened - I've ordered an aftermarket wireless charger to fit into the space and will see how I get on with that, wonder if it is just a magnetic coil whether it could be retrofitted at a later date

Been told by my dealer that the wireless chargers are now back in, along with touch screen, but various other deletions have been added. 😞

I ended up ordering an oem part off eBay and replacing it myself - very easy to do with just a few torx screws. You can pick one up for about £90, most seem to come from Europe and are from salvage vehicles.

It works very well for me so glad I did it.
The part number 9434000 should be a direct swap

There are some on ebay that look like they are from an X5. Would it be the same part?

Going for Ł110 so don’t want to splash the cash if its not going to fit/work.

Bought an aftermarket one that was supposed to work but it was utter rubbish, and only charged for about 10 secs then the light started flashing to indicate it wasn’t charging

I have a short commute just 15-20mins so on those journeys I just throw the phone on the charging pad, it holds its charge and doesn't get too hot. If I'm doing a longer journey then I plug it in. I like having the choice but agree the cable charges quicker and my phone doesn't get as hot

Bear in mind that the proper pad doesn’t just charge. There’s also a 4G repeater connected to the roof aerial, so the phone gets a much better signal in the tray if you’re in a poor reception area.

Have you ever noticed that this repeater helps the signal?

A “repeater”?? Really? I assumed it was just an inductively-coupled aerial. Interesting…

I might be using the wrong terminology. In the RF licensing PDF it’s referred to as an ‘LTE compensator’, which I guess could mean anything. But it does have declared RF licences and frequencies.
