Wow... this designer seems like a pompous, stubborn douche. Would hate to work with him or even be around him human to human lol

Pity

So everyone I have been experimenting with BMW Designs to see if the can be different and new without being ugly. BMW Mercedes and Porsche are very Evolutionary designs there is nothing wrong with trying something new to refresh the Brand look at the example of the Ferrari 288GTO it redefined the brand for the future it was a landmark design BMW could do this to and some of the new crop have flashes of bits that could work the origami approach on the XM doesn’t work, the blobbiness of the IX isn’t taut athletic, the big grilles are getting desperate also there is a clutter of lines there is too much to the point the designs are too fussy with my 3rd attempt I’m exploring the XM and seeing if using the same car essentially with a new design could work, I’m going to try a new paint finish and refine the cues I’m developing. Let’s see what happens any thoughts on my 3 5 7 or IX would be interesting. Thanks all.

The BMW XM how it Could have been

Dear BMW fans taking the BMW XM and thinking about how it could have been done better I took the proportions sketched by hand over and rendered it. We are celebrating 50 Years of MSport hence the Lurid paintjob those rear pillars are from an M1 the Clamshell bonnet is from the XM but I’ve have lowered it over the grille and lights, I made the windows bigger gave some shape and Muscle back to the flat body. Hopefully if you like BMWs you like this after all the work I planted it back on the XM’s Wheels. In your face Dukec. I hope you like it and I have proved designing a BMW isn’t impossible in 2022

To be honest, I'm having a problem with your BMW 'interpretations'. Different I agree, I admire your attempt at a new design, but not seeing you have proved designing a BMW isn't impossible in 2022.

Well thanks for the feedback I’m not sure what exactly I’m not getting right 🤷*♂️ Back to the drawing board so I guess that’s the conclusion then I’m not able to improve on the BMWs of old and Dukec isn’t really nailing it either perhaps BMW reached its evolutionary conclusion with the i8 and since that it’s just be downhill.

You are taking too much inspiration from the i8... Lot of people absolutely hated the i8 in every single way. Use the F series M cars as inspiration instead..

"You will never design anything that 100% of people will like. It's not possible…"

Yet you somehow managed to design something 95 percent of people will dislike. Now that's an achievement, bravo.

So what we have learned here is for a lot of you BMW is acceptable as long as it never ever changes, Dan you clearly have no understanding of maths because not enough people have commented to conclude 95% of people hate it which if true would be a marked improvement on the XM it was drawn over. Apparently the I8 is hated as well, that’s crazy it’s one of the most innovative and exciting BMW designs in BMW’s history and a really revolutionary design full stop. If you lot were in charge of the markers you would just photocopy a previous car change something completely imperceptible like the dust caps and be satisfied Although I think Dukec is mistaken in using too many lines and rejecting good proportions and BMW design cues I now see what he is up against and actually his absurd radicalism is what you probably deserve. Mind you BMW owners are a conservative bunch and abhor change. The 8series coupe, the Z1, the M1, the I8, the X5, the 3.0 CSL (batmobile) even the 2002 we’re all radical at the time. Progress is built on exploring something new BMW would cease to exist if it didn’t experiment. You may or may not like my designs but they are nowhere as terrible as the keyboard warriors on here suggest. Keyboard warriors get out your pens and show me how it’s done.

People hated the i8's looks? That's news to me. I'm not sure I ever heard a bad thing about its looks.

Short answer, yes. The sales stats tell the full story as well

Yeah, I'm gonna have to disagree on this one... the sales tell the story on an overpriced and underperforming 2 seat sports car.

I get the feeling you're agreeing with me but in another way.. Obviously the looks are subjective, but almost every single bmw enthusiast I have talked to over the past few years hates the i8 for not only the performance, but also the looks

That's the opposite reaction I've seen. I don't think I've ever talked to anyone that doesn't like how the i8 looks. Maybe I should start a poll. I bet it will be at least 75% think it looks great.

I like the I8. Now the Edsel grilles...that is another matter.

Maybe we want evolutionary approach just like other brands. "If it works don't change that". There's plenty of awesome inspirations from bmw's past. Embrace it.

"Revolutionary or evolutionary" has always divided opinion. Can't please everyone, whatever the approach.

People here say, "You want BMW to remain stagnant with their designs?" as if those that like the classic kidneys are clearly wrong. There is something about BMW's design that got us all interested in the first place, likely in the days (2 years ago) of still old school kidneys. Sure the shape of them has evolved some over the years from the baby grills in the early 2000's to the larger more recent 3/4 series (pre-2021). I'm of the camp that if it's not broken, don't revolutionize it. I'm not anti the new grilles per se (see my sig - I bought one of the new M4), but it's not the design I'd have chosen.

Seems BMW made the right decision going with the new design. Traditionalists tend to slow progress. BMW M is nowhere near as exclusive as Porsche so they can’t afford to have traditionalist dictate design change. The sales numbers prove that.

I never claimed they didn't or wouldn't sell well. It's just not the design I'd have preferred or that I fell in love with BMW for.
