I never realized that sucking in water could cause hydro-lock and basically destroy your engine. Not that I plan on taking my Z4 for a swim, but good to keep in mind for those torrential rain periods.

I am no expert, but I'd think something was modified and the engine blew at a higher (racing) RPM - hence the holes in the block. I know the engine is mostly aluminum, but there didn't seem to be a trace of water or rust in it.

Oh yeah. People hydro-lock engines all the time by driving in deep water or puddles and the engine sucks it in.

It doesn't take that much when the piston is at TDC. Whatever was left probably mixed in with the oil possibly causing that sludge.

I drive thru touchless auto washes with engine on without issues. That's a lot of water thrown at the front.

Torrential rain tends to create a lot of standing water all over the roads, parking lots, etc that you may end up driving through by accident or on purpose. I'd be more worried about hydroplaning personally, but yeah.

I would hope that it's obvious to people that submerging the drivetrain in water isn't wise.

I think you give the average person too much credit! How many people know the combustion cycle and that water isn't compressible?

The problem, if it isn't obvious, is sucking water into the intake. it gets inside the cylinder, and when the piston comes up to compress it that doesn't happen. rod bends or snaps and sometimes punches a hole in the side of the block.

You only need to worry when driving through a huge puddle of water, all cars are designed to drive through any type of rain without getting any liquid water into the engine. The air intake path takes turns, has low points with drains, etc. to prevent this. Aftermarket intake systems will hopefully also have similar considerations but not always, I remember installing a C7 Corvette Z06 intake system which had an optional ram air component that came with a warning to never drive in rain while that was installed.

Driving your car through a deep puddle can easily overwhelm the drains or other design features of any car's intake system, though. I have a 2015 S63 AMG at my shop right now that was just totalled by insurance after it drove through a puddle, hydrolocked the motor, bent a rod, etc. The cost of the engine is high enough to declare the car a total loss.

Liquids are typically not compressible so a surprisingly small amount of liquid water in your engine combustion chamber will be squeezed by the piston until it cannot be compressed any further and will usually bend the connecting rod at a minimum.

It literally takes standing water up to the height of the intake (several feet) to hydro lock. Puddles won't do it lol.

You would think the crowds standing on the side would be a clue that things are about to go sideways, but you have to give those drivers points for confidence as they accelerated into the water.

When I worked on Brickell and 12th street in Miami, the intersection often flooded during heavy rain. From my window I had a birds-eye view of folks trying to barrel through standing water, in an oblivious fashion as if they were in amphibious vehicles. My office mates and I would wage bets on those who were most likely to get stuck. Once water covered the hood they were more often than not done. Unless you have a Defender, Tacoma, Wrangler, etc with a snorkel and/or serious ground clearance, itÂ’s hydra-lock city. IÂ’m sure many of them got their feelings hurt when taking the car to the dealer for service assuming they could get engine repairs/replacement under the OEM vehicle warranty.:rolleyes And those without the right insurance coverage were equally hosed.

All the rodbearings are in new like state.
If high revs kills an engine, either the bearings were at real high stress or the valves hit the pistons (valves start to float), or the engine gets so hot, the piston seizes. Neither thing looks like happened. If the piston seizes, it usually just stalls and doesnt break a rod because it goes fairly gradually with extended high revs (that said, it's cyl#6, the one that runs hottest..)
So hydrolocking still looks like a plausible cause, 2 cylinders next to eachother were locked, so the gulp of water went to the back (maybe inertia?)

The landrovers, I can understand, showing off for the kids. But the rest...

Shows that BMW makes great cars and really bad submarines

BTW hydrolocking can of course also occur when a car gets off the road and slips into a ditch with standing water.

Nothing points to that in the video imho.

Nonsense, I've driven through 6-8 inches of standing water, sucked into intake, engine trashed. 3 series 335d. I've also seen a couple of Bm's stranded in similar depths of water. No doubt with the same outcome as mine.
