With a B48 I'd guess JB+ maybe 20hp so makes sense, that isn't as noticeable. With the B58 it's a pretty nice kick in the pants. Not a full JB4 but for $200 really solid.

I can vouch for this on the B58. As I mentioned I recently picked up the JB+ for my M340i. For the money, I'm happy with it so far. I still need to try out some more boost levels and see how drivability is but for plug and play it's 'really' hard to really find anything that compares apples to apples for price to performance.

The ONLY thing I need to confirm right now is if there was some kind of delay/lag introduced on throttle input. I'm not saying it just to say it - I'm sensitive to throttle response and stock the B58/M340i response is phenomenal. The first thing I noticed after driving off with the JB+ is, at least in lower RPMs, throttle response seemed to be scaled back every so slightly. If I was to take a wild stab at it - the ECU is expecting certain results, and as the JB+ is rewriting boost, etc. under acceleration it is recalculating it to match targets or adjust for what it believes it should be getting. It's not inherently a problem - at all. I drove a couple more days on it - and it's fine. But, I'll remove it again to check myself on it.

Car still drives smooth, not jerky transmission changes, etc. So far, so good.

That's what this thread is about. Until DME is unlocked, no tuning. From anyone.

My comments on this subject are for entertainment and my own curiosity.

I do not work in the automotive industry so I must rely on the experts who do to fill in some of the gaps for me.

I was at a DEFCON, when things used to be normal, where OTA, specifically the BMW OTA exploit CVE-2018-9322, was referenced.

It is clear that an update does not need to be downloaded or approved for install by the user. That is clear as the above stated exploit was patched OTA by BMW.

Isn't it possible that BMW could OTA determine if a DME was unlocked and if so, lock it remotely?

There are a ton of attack surfaces that connected vehicles have (GSM, HTTP, NGTP etc). If you learned what type of encryption the OTAs used (asymmetric I assume) wouldn't it be possible to spoof an update with the parameters chosen by the user?

I am sorry if this has been asked before.

I have a 2020 M340i, and my dealership updated my software to 2020/11.45. Is it still DME unlockable?

Is there a way to tell if your DME is bench locked? I've got an OBD wireless thing from MHD and wanted to connect.

It may be currently locked, but it's definitely unlockable (if that's a word)

Yes.

Download BM3 on your iPhone or laptop. Run a pre-scan via OBDP and send this to protuningfreaks (the owners of BM3)

They'll read the scan from the ECU and tell you what the status is.

Takes 5mins, costs nowt and the service from them is 1st class.

I attached the MHD box to the obd port and just a had a look at codes and how it worked. As soon as I went on the tuning window it said no bueno and needs an unlock so that was a fairly easy way.

Nightmare getting it unlocked where I am. Every tuner doesn't know or doesn't want to bother.

Those are some great points. Wouldn't be surprised at all if in the near future something like that would be SOP for manufacturers. Standard two way conversations between vehicles and the manufacturer. Live diagnostics, etc., labeled as a way to further refine servicing and to keep vehicles running in top condition. General public would love it. The rest of us? Not so much. Expanding OTA comms would smash open that attack surface. Regardless of what type of encryption the OEM used, someone will find a way to either break it or sidestep it. Whether that would take an APT or some random motivated dude would depend on the crypto I guess. Either way, I wouldn't be 100% comfortable with it.

So if a 2020 has been locked by BMW it can be unlocked? As opposed to the 2021's which at this point can't be unlocked? Just trying to understand this.

Yes that's correct. I believe the newer DME has some physical changes too if I understood Alex at mission tuning correctly.
