CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. This regulatory board wants to make sure that any modifications to a car's engine complies with the state's strict emissions regulations. In a nutshell, if an aftermarket part, such as a cold air intake, has a CARB Number, then it is recognized by CARB as a compliant part/modification. This should only be relevant when the car is going for a smog test in CA.

However, these days, the DMV doesn't require smog tests on new cars for at least 4 years and when they do require a test, the tests are done via computer hook up, not hood up, I think. Anyway, great intake for the M340i, I'm considering one myself

In regards to CA CARB testing, on Dinan's website they mention the following.

"Testing with the California Air Resources Board, in order to achieve 50-state compliance, is pending with CARB. Once testing is complete with California, and an E.O. number is issued, this product will be updated to 50-state legal status."

Curious as to how long CARB testing usually takes. As well as wondering if I was to purchase the intake before it became CARB legal, would I still receive the sticker or badge showing the EO number after the product has been approved?(Granted it gets approved)

I feel this is the best looking design out there. I can't wait for the M440ix version. I have the M440ix braces installed on my M340i. I have even been tempted to order this version and add washers to raise the brace on the CAI side. I love this system that much. I just need patience. Patience "my precious". 😁. Dinan this and your exhaust were and only my choices. Love your products. I wish I could send my M340i to you and have it made an Official Dinan made Series. Dinan do you still do that with BMW's?

Signature and Power packages as well as the Factory Build Program were eliminated in January of this year unfortunately. M440i intake and associated parts are coming soon-ish. Patience this time of year (and all of the last 2 yers or so for that matter) is in short supply but it will be worth it. Promise. =)

Folks with the intake installed currently: what are your thoughts after having it in the car after some time? Buyer's remorse or anything like that?

So far so good. Sounds great when you're on it. Completely invisible when you're not. Also according to Kies Motorsports, their MST intake yielded like 10+hp from an intake and this intake is a similar design so there might be a 10hp bump over stock.

Like a whooshing? If so, that's your turbo letting excess boost out the wastegate. Totally normal sound.

Dinan_Engineering, ETA on new orders are more "wait and see", or anything concrete?

Contact the sales folks at 1-800-341-5480 and they may have a more definitive answer as I can't seem to log onto the backend remotely for some reason. However before I left for vacation the next batch of carbon wasn't due for another month or so. Of course the ETA of those shipments tend to fluctuate so anything definitive is difficult at best.

Fair enough. I appreciate the response! First day of winter in the Northeast so there's no shortage of cold air for the engine, even in its stock form.

Are there any aftermarket turbo inlet pipes that are compatible with the Dinan intake? Specifically, just the lower portion that connects to the turbo as that's all that's needed from the stock pipe.

EDIT: I may have found what I was looking for.

Couldn't say specifically as we don't go searching out and testing competitor products for compatibility but if you are not in a crazy rush you may want to wait as their might be some additional stuff in the pipeline.

Not in a rush at all. Just looking around to see what's available. I'll keep a look out for what you guys might have coming.

Dinan_Engineering Are these filters reusable? Are they to be cleaned with the standard K&N kits and reoiled?

Just checked the Dinan website and the description is still the same. Any idea when the testing will be completed and the intake will be CARB certified for sale and use in CA?
