Ask the music companies how that worked out for them? Not worth it for for them to go after tuners and endure the bad press, they can just figure out how it's done and block it on the next iteration. Eventually the security will be at the chip level (don't ask me how I know) and then all tuners are screwed.

The current Tricore Bosch MEVD and MG1 ECUs are locked in the bootloader of the ECU and is implemented on processor level.

Wonder if TSMC makes the chips for Bosch? Back door through Taiwan?

Considering TSMC corners the market, I wouldn't be surprised, but auto manufacturers (even tier 1) are last in the allocation priority, so probably globalfoundries or one of the other handful of major foundries. Security at the chip level though happens at the design house phase not necessarily at the fab.

Currently the M2 is not part of development as all work is focused on MG1. Though we are looking into the m2 in very near future.

That’s not what he said. He said they’re working on it and one of 3 things need to happen before it’s released. This helps everyone because Alex has proven it can be done and they’re working on a way to get it to us. I don’t understand why some people feel offended that someone else won’t let them have something. We’re not entitled to anything unless we have purchased something or have an agreement with another party. Be patient, life goes on.

I know what he wrote, just my thought about it. And reading the whole thread looks like im not alone
Not offended, i dont even have a G80 etc.

But out of those 3 options which one you think is going to happen? Like really, i know nothing about coding etc. But i guess someone will figure it out eventually and it's going public, release by someone else than MP anyway.

It seems many people missed that this is presently in private beta testing...meaning it's not fit for public consumption just yet.

Soon enough the kinks will be worked out (I imagine including some level of security Alex is comfortable with) and the product will be released.

**update from my recent 6/28 trip to MP (this is a cross post from the main news thread where I also shared this info)**

• 21 unlock is the real deal
• unlock continues to be in closed beta testing (as stated on the website) it is possible but not ready to be productized just yet
• unlock was shared to showcase what is to come and let the BMW community know the 21 is not off limits
• roll out and development stages to market are following the same path as most of the MP unlocks have followed in the past (closed beta, limited beta, first to market - first to offer etc)
• revised MP tuning app is close to release and will include hybrid/electric options - and IOS option
• Security will be a non issue by the time public release happens (not sure if this means MP wont care or if the issue will be dealt with)
• Couple of Supras on site with manufacturer plates that he would not comment on
• Fun stuff: Supercharged Alpina 5 series under construction on site along with an M Coupe they are stuffing an E39 M5 V8 into / always fun to see the slew of other rare BMWs on site - visit them if you can while in socal - not only does MP produce performance software they build crazy 1 off BMWs for customers and themselves

I see people in this thread and other forums linking to this thread complaining that MP hasn't released anything yet and acting entitled. As a fellow software engineer, I see this a little differently. Am I bummed that the 2021 X3M I'm about to pickup can't be flash tuned yet? Yeah, it sucks, but at the end of the day, there will be a solution from MP and likely others as well.

Dealing with entitled people is extremely tiring, I used to deal with that a ton when I made ROMs for phones - users wanted stuff NOW and felt entitled to immediate updates after making a $5 donation to buy our app. It's just not realistic or welcomed at all. I can't see MP doing this, but if they wanted, they could take whatever exploit they found for the ECUs and turn them over to Bosch/BMW if they wanted (and if the price was right) and whining about how unfair it was that they were able to get access to these ECUs and now you can't get your car tuned is just too bad. No one else is entitled to another company's private work, no matter how much you want it.

Let's give these guy some time to handle this release how they need to without being annoying. We know it's a matter of WHEN and not IF at this point. At the end of they day, they need to make money and protect their IP in the process, let them do that without the annoyingly entitled peanut gallery.
