Upgrade from stock sound

Just bought a G20 330i, what mods would make the biggest sound improvement? Which ones are the best bang for your $?

Start with unplugging or unclipping the exhaust valve to stay open. And...it's free.

For the best sound, get the REMUS exhaust.

I got an FI exhaust catback and catless Downpipes. The catback is amazing and by far my favorite mod but it is expensive but I got it used so I got a discount.

Budget build here on exhaust:

- OEM muffler
- straight pipe & vibrant resonator from primary cat back
- catless downpipe
- OEM muffler actuator valve unplugged

~$500 labour included

On stock this should sound very very tame but enough. If you can get over the smell during idle and not bump AC on auto, this is the cheapest way to get the best sound. The exhaust cracks on upshift at WOT, it is wicked with or without burbles.

I have experimented with other setups in the past:

- muffler delete w/ OEM exhaust (too loud and ricey, too much drone)
- muffler delete and catless downpipe (maximum loudness… you will hate it in 2 days)
- catless dp and custom magnaflow axleback

The catless dp and magnaflow muffler was the second best sounding by far, but it didn’t last long with AGG tune since the insides of magnaflow muffler started deteriorating causing very bad drone that wasn’t existent when mufflers were new.

Just my $0.02, please share what you decide to do!

Do you think going with a 100/200 cell downpipe would affect the sound too much? get rid of some of the gas smell but retain the sound?

Dependent on the rest of your setup.

If it is fully catless (i.e. second cat/resonator deleted) then the 100/200 cell wouldn't make much of a difference in terms of sound.

If anything it would affect flow.. Catless always flows best.

Yeah but in theory will probably reduce/get rid of the gas smell you have correct?

Not necessarily, when I had primary cat deleted only, the smell was actually pretty acceptable.

After 2nd cat delete, all hell broke loose and the smell got so bad that almost every passenger has told me or asked me about the smell.

I am not sure a 100/200 cell in the primary cat with the secondary cat removed will help with the smell at all
